Am I the only one...

absolutely abhored by the idea of a "live" version of The Last Unicorn?? At the ripe age of 31 I am STILL completely enthralled and moved by the 1982 film and cannot imagine how a live version could possible improve the original. I watched this movie and read the book so many times as a kid I am sure my parents would easily say I was obsessed. The emotions this story evoked from me is truly hard to explain and it is one of the rarest of rare movies that I can still enjoy over 27 years later. Can any true fan disagree that doing anything besides leaving the original alone would be a tragedy? Please tell me I am not alone on this...PLEASE!

If you had read and loved the book before they made the animated movie would you have been opposed to the idea of a movie at all? A live action adaptation would not be a remake of the 1982 movie; it would be a separate adaptation of the novel.

Many Lord of the Rings fans loved Ralph Bakshi's adaptation of the books. Did that make Peter Jackson's objectionable?

I love both the novel and movie of The Last Unicorn, but I would love to see a well-done live action version. There were important plot points that got cut from the 1982 version, and there were some parts of the movie that I just thought weren't done as well as the could be. Plus, Beagle included so many songs in the book, I'd like to see them put to music and included in a film adaptation.

~Shrug~ I can't help it ...I greet the adaption of The Last Unicorn in live version with the same enthusiasm that I do Stephen King novels being made into movies. No matter how well the intentions the end result is always the same - lacking.

"The Shining" (Kubrick), "Stand by Me" (Reiner), "Misery" (Reiner again)... it's been done. As somebody suggested, you need the right director.

I have a different perspective because I never read this book as a kid, I never saw the movie and I just watched it this evening. I think the music is terrible, but that's par for the course in Rankin/Bass productions. So that's one obvious area you can improve. Why would this be so horrible? It would be a new fantasy movie like "How to Train Your Dragon" and a lot of young people would go read the book because of the movie. I think literally live action with human actors would probably be pointless though.

I can understand why a person may be sceptical of whether a new adaptation will be any good.

I don't understand why a person would be abhorred by the idea. That doesn't make much sense to me.

I would love to see a live version of this and I just hope it stays true to the book, not B.S. it like they slightly did with the Chronicles of Narnia.

I would still be interested in a live action adaptation so long as it was done well. Personally I think as a live action film it could work better if the focus was more on Schmendrick's curse and his relationship with Molly rather than so much on Amalthea and Lir. Of course I'd want Amalthea and Lir in it too, but for it to be significantly different from the animated version and to appeal more to adults I think focusing on Schmendrick would be the way to go. I love the animated version but there is so much more in the novel that they could work with. Even though I still love the animated version as an adult there is no denying its primary target audience was younger viewers so I'd love a live action adaptation which is a fairy tale for grown ups, similar in tone to the film version of Angela Carter's The Company of Wolves.
