How in the hell did this and Secret of NIMH got away with G ratings?

I mean cussing like damns and hell, The unicorn turning into a hot chick as she is in the buff in her debut with a bit of brief butt, dark themes and all that. Even NIMH got away with a G rating the same year as this and there was blood, dark stuff and one use of damn.

The MPAA must had been high on dope than giving these PG ratings. It's almost like how Critters 2 got away with a PG-13 rating as it showed gory violence, language and even a hot scene where an alien bounty hunter turns into a naked playboy centerfold. Or when Beetljuice got away with a PG rating than PG13 or Spaceballs as both had language even the F bomb.

You raise some pretty good points. This movie also has the harpy, with obvious female chest parts, and the scene with Schmendrick and the tree. The tree even called the unicorn a hussy.
But then again, there are many movies that get away with baffling things. In "Sleeping Beauty" Maleficent says 'Hell.' In "The Little Mermaid" although it isn't easy to notice, Ariel's private areas are briefly visible after she turns human. There's also "Hocus Pocus," and I won't lie when I say that I have issues with that flick despite how popular it is. There's a lesser-known movie titled "Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde" which got a PG-13 rating, but IMO should've gotten an R rating because it's a bit raunchy. LOL
About Amalthea being nude, when is her rear shown? I've never seen anything. LOL

Oh yes the harpy oh yes, she had 3 knockers like in Total Recall. That Tree part was hilarious and always does make me laugh, oh yes she called the unicorn a hussy indeed.

The chick the unicorn turns into's rear is shown when she is laying on the ground and when she gets up to wobble all akward.

You remember NIMH too? or Critters 2 as well?

I don't think I've ever seen "Critters 2," but I do remember "NIMH." It's been forever since I've seen it though.
In addition to what I already mentioned about "Sleeping Beauty," the entire plot overall was dark and disturbing. A defenseless newborn infant princess being cursed to die when she's older...ugh!
"Pinocchio" had some *beep* up things too, particularly when Lampwick turns into a donkey. *shudders*

Because people were a lot less uptight back then.

Because this predated PG-13 as a rating and as a whole the ratings of G, PG and R weren't judged on the same scale that they are now. Because there was no middle ground between PG and R, PG films got away with more, and as a result G movies got away with more too. Once PG-13 came out (give or take a few years of growing pains for it to settle into what we now know it as) both PG and G became more restrictive in terms of what was considered acceptable to get that rating.

I actually wrote a whole article on ten reasons why this movie should get bumped up to a PG rating. Why won't anyone adjust the movie ratings? I think it's somewhat misleading for parents who are unfamiliar with the movie that the DVD cover is all cutesy and there's a G rating on the back of it and the movie is actually pretty dark for a really small kid's film. It's an alright movie but it should be updated to PG status.

My favorite movies from childhood were the ones with tragic/scary elements. Look at how many comments there are from people who were scared by the Red Bull, yet they return to the movie as adults because they have fond memories.

Kids do not need to be treated as idiots and sheltered from fear. Scary elements were standard in children's fiction right up through history until the last few decades.

People need to stop pretending their kids are so fragile and let them enjoy well-made children's fiction again.

reply

Because it used to be that kids entertainment wasn't dummied down. It was age-appropriate but it didn't pretend bad things don't exist.

reply

Because back then parents explained to their children that bad things happen in the world and that you have to overcome them. Today we coddle children, thinking that they are too stupid to deal with the slightest discomfort. They grow up never knowing how to function.

I remember having a vhs of Jaws and the box said PG

I just checked IMDb, it's still considered PG lol I wouldn't let my kids watch that!
