What's Captain Cully's angle?

What's the point behind Captain Cully?

It was explained to me, but not very well. Nash, of Channel Awesome and Radio Dead Air did a review of TLU, he said the Cully and his men were supposed to be imitating Robin Hood, but were nothing like them because they had the story all wrong. If that's the case, then what did they get wrong and what were they as a result?

IIRC they wanted to be like RH (as I imagine most Greenwood Outlaws would), which is why most of them ran off after Schmendrick's illusion, but found that the reality wasn't as simple. The book makes it more obvious (they admit to stealing from the poor as it's easier).

No tears please, it's a waste of good suffering.
