News on the Live-Action Remake

I had been anticipating the remake of this. I visited the website when they had all the artist renderings of the new version. It looked awesome. Then it fell off the face of the earth. Well, this may be old news but I just read an interview with the author and his business manager. His business manager Cochran replied when asked about a remake

"There is a person out there with live-action rights, and he's had them since 1999. He loses them in 2015. When rights revert, we know people who are interested in making "The Last Unicorn" live action."

Encouraging news!! Here is link to full article. http://www.denverpost.com/ci_23397775/last-unicorn-creator-beagle-reca lls-his-novel-revives

I would love to see a live action remake, and if they did it fast enough, they could still use Lee as Haggird

reply

It's very encouraging. I'm still waiting also. I would love to see Lee return as King Haggard but time is ticking.

reply

Are you sure about that? lmao

I wouldn't call a new live-action film based on Peter S Beagle's book The Last Unicorn a "remake" of the animated film, i call it a new adaptation of the book. When someone makes a new movie based on the book "Dracula" by Bram Stoker, they are not remaking 1931's film or 1922's Nosferatu or any other film before it, they are doing a new adaptation of the book. To me the definition of a remake is when it's based on a motion picture produced earlier and a screenplay (an original one not based on any existing source material being books/novels/novellas) like say King Kong by Peter Jackson, now that's a remake. To say a new film based on Beagle's book a "remake" is like saying Lord of the Rings by PJ are "remakes" of Bakshi/Rankin-Bass toons, nope they are new separate adaptations. Calling a new film based on an old comic previously film or a new film based on a novel filmed before a remake cheapens it a bit, when like i said they are separate adaptations. There are differences between remakes and adaptations.

You are very right. I only say remake since I, like many, only know The Last Unicorn from the cartoon. This was the first and only exposure for many. I do own the novel now and wish to read it one day but most of use remember this from the cartoon. I am just thrilled to see this movie finally moving forward. I was mesmerized by the cartoon, as a child. No disrespect intended to any. lol

If it is done by Peter Jackson, few things are guaranteed to happen, he will make it into a trilogy (why? I have no idea), he will probably make the love story expanded, maybe even throw a love triangle. Look what he did with the second Hobbit movie? (I still am pissed about the stupid love story between Kili and that she elf one who didn't bloody exist in the books for pete's sake). Peter may also make those damn long ass extended scenes sequance. Oh God it is boring.

I was kind of hoping Tim Burton would do it.. lol
Can you imagine?

How about Alfonso Cauron as director with James Cameron and Guillermo Del Toro as producers? and i'd can see Carolco as the studio.

Del Toro? The Red Bull would be terrifying. lol. How about John Carpenter for that matter. Would be interested in seeing a quick storyboard "take" of the film by several producers named here to compare. That would be cool. All of them have done quality work. I just hope they don't go over the top with CGI. I like special effects but don't want a movie shoot in a green room.

reply

Yes Carpenter can be interesting since he did one fantasy movie called Big Trouble in Little China. but what about Alfonso Cauron? he did well on the third Harry Potter film.

Do you think Del Toro and Cameron are good choices for executive producers? Del Toro did dazzled us with Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy 1 & 2, Devil's Backbone, Cronos and more. And James Cameron is a big name as he did Aliens, Terminator 1 & 2, Avatar and more. Cameron is a fan of Sci-fi/fantasy even of animation and books even fantasy books, i'm sure he is a fan of the book and likes the animated version. It can be something different for Cameron to do besides action, drama and sci-fi but a fantasy film.

Tom Savini (Make up artist and creature maker of Dawn of the Dead 1978, Martin 1976, Maniac 1980, Creepshow, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Day of the Dead, Monkey Shines and more) and Rick Baker can collabrate together on make-up effects even on Mommy Fortuna and some of her freaks to a close up of Unicorn's face turning human, WETA should do the special effects here.
