Wish someone would re-release this

I saw it back in the 80's after "Law of Desire" and "Women on the Verge..." made Almodovar's reputation here in the US. Some distributors went back and scrambled to get the rights to release Almovodar's earlier films. It also was briefly released on VHS and then it vanished over here. It would be great to see it again

It's not a great movie, but it is a lot of fun. Even then some of the actors who would make up Almodovar's troupe where here, particularly Cecilia Roth and Antonio Banderas as a lovesick gay assassin who finds people by his sense of smell. Yep, it's that kind of movie!

I wonder why Sony Picture Classics didn't pick up this movie when they went back and got the rights to "Matador" and "Law of Desire" forthe recent Almodovar box set. I'm guessing someone still has the rights and wanted more money than Sony would pay. Or else the original film elements may be in very bad shape and need a lot of work before they could issue a DVD.

A UK Region2 disc was recently released by Tartan. You can order it through Amazon.co.uk. I ordered my copy last week, but have yet to receive it. I'll let you know the quality when I see for myself.

Cut & paste the link:

The DVD has no extras, aside from the original unsubbed trailer. The songs performed in the movie by Almodovar are also unsubbed. The rest of the movie is subbed. It is a serviceable transfer for such an ignored film. The price is 19.99GBP. Personally, I found the film to be very similar to "Pepi, Luci, Bom..." (though not as great), and definitely not as terrible as "Kika" and "Dark Habits."

It is a serviceable transfer . . .
Only just. Even the trailer on the DVD looks better. Rent it, don't buy it, is my advice.
