Good to see James Caan in a comic role for a change
That film must be a relief from his numerous dramatic roles (especially in the Godfather).

shareI thought he was great in this movie...very charming and funny as well.
shareIt's interesting that Caan has that tough, dramatic reputation but during his peak he was actually been in a number of comedies/lighter movies:
Chapter Two
Kiss Me Goodbye
Slither
Harry and Walter...
Funny Lady
He was certainly the best thing about this movie.
Don't forget For the Boys. He was great in that one.
shareRight, Caan's jubulant performance is the best thing about this movie. I imagine he and director Robert Mulligan got along quite well on the set--Mulligan seems to have allowed Caan to really let loose with his performance, and it shows in the finished film. Moreso than the performances of Sally Field and Jeff Bridges (and Claire Trevor) combined, in fact.
"What I don't understand is how we're going to stay alive this winter."
Be great to see him in a comic role that was funny as well. His performance here consists of playing with his fedora ala Gene Kelly and smirking ala James Caan.
share100% agree with the OP!
Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.
He nailed it.
