this movie sucks

this movie is a mistake. Probably, the worst Bruno Barreto's movie i've seen.
he fails trying to adaptate the seventies Brazilian movie/book Dona Flor e seus dois maridos to the american audience.

What a stupid loser
I like this movie. No one even replied to this pointless post.

All I want to do is find my way back into love

reply

The problem is trying to compare it instead of enjoying it for what it is, a wonderfully cast, funny love story.

I heard the penis biting scene was removed.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

reply

I really liked this movie, too!

reply

that's because virtually no one saw this film. color me a stupid loser as well -- this movie was little more than a vapid remake of something far deeper.

Great cast just too slow moving and dull.
BTW am I the only one to see this is also sort of another take on Blithe Spirit?
The 1950s TV play also had Mildred Natwick

It's true. The whole point of the original was to explore desire, not romance. It's really rare to see female sexuality represented so interestingly and without exploiting it as the original did. This remake does what every Hollywood remake does: it slaps a love story on top of something more interesting to sell it better. It's okay to enjoy something for what it is, but if it's just part of a greater tendency to manipulate the audience for a buck, then it's something worth questioning a little bit.

reply

I enjoyed it for what it was, and was not aware it was a remake when I first saw it in the theatre.

Be happy the filmmakers acknowledge it is a remake than call it their own original creation. Standard procedure used to be to pirate the story and settle out of court later.

It is you that sucks.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

Charlie Peters wrote the screenplay of this remake. It was BASED on Bruno´s classic Brazilia film...do your homework before badmouthing someone.

Truly stupid film. Hollywood turned a sexy Brazilian film into a sexless, sterile 40's retro comedy sans laughs and point. The actors embarrass themselves in that tired talking to someone no one else can see tradition. Topper(1937)and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken(1966) with Don Knott's were funnier and more sophisticaated. This film does indeed suck. It's tired hokum and painfully unfunny

reply

Yep, truly stupid film, but you do a disservice to 40's comedies. The best ones contained clever dialog loaded with innuendo and double entendres in order to circumvent/conform to the Hays Code. Moreover, James Caan is no actor; he is always just James Caan occupying a role - mugging as usual in this one. Who would ever think that boor was charming - or more handsome than Jeff Bridges? Totally lame rehash of a film.

This film does not age well. I can't imagine liking such slow moving films back then, but I must have. It never peaked. It just rolled slowly along with nothing new or even clever. The dog possession did break up the monotony though. Unfortunate, good cast, but terrible writing and directing.

reply

The direction is pretty mediocre, yes. But I have a hunch Robert Mulligan was more of a director-for-hire on this movie. His real forte was human drama.
