Makes no sense.

A weak script, and one of Mulligan's weakest films.

It was a ghost that she needed to get rid of. She knew about the affairs, but did not want to acknowledge them, and moving back into the old home forced those memories to the surface.

That's kind of what the whole movie's about.

Yes, she pretty much explains the reasoning right near the end.
