I can't believe no comments re this movie!!

I really enjoyed this film and wanted to know if anyone else thinks this movie is under rated. I know Bette had a bad experience making it, but it show cases her comedic talents!!

reply

I haven't seen it in fifteen years but I do remember thinking it was better than its reputation...

reply

Great Movie! I still love the song at the end.

reply

well, i hope you check in once in a while ... i absolutely agree with you -- i think this film Was under rated, absolutely and undeservedly so ... although it is understandable in a way ... it can be easier to criticise a film (Anything, really) that 'takes a chance' and perhaps 'flirts' with OTHER THAN whatever is generally accepted at a given point in time as being 'worthwhile' and/or 'hip'
a/o 'germane'/'timely'/'thought provoking'/etc.
While it is 'safer' perhaps to make a ''relevant'' film showing the struggle of some common man/woman against the big bad system or the uncaring forces of big business etc., ad nauseum, what is perhaps 'true-er' is that when the victory is won, (or lost), and the lights and cameras are all packed up and the good guys live happily ever after ... there's gonna be some 'ordinary' livin' goin' on IN that 'happily ever after world', not All of which is as glamorous as the Movies might lead one to think it's gonna be.
But i guess i digress. I've found that if i'm willing to be open minded, there's a Lot of ''sleepers'' like Jinxed! -- films i would never Think could POSSIBLY be any good, but that end up suprising me. I mean like check out 'the King of Comedy' with Deniro, Sandra Bernhardt (sp.?) and of All people (!)Jerry Lewis. Dumbest plot/story line imagineable -- but what a nice suprise ! Ever think there's Nothing you don't already know about Jerry Lewis (e.g.)? Yeah? Well Learn something ... check out a sleeper.

i bought the DVD through my employer company's website (FYE.Com) last summer, and found the movie to be pretty great. i'm a big fan of bette midler's (which you can tell by any of my posts), so, of course, i had to have this movie. i tried for a long time to find it, and was only able to get it through our site. well, anyway, i'd heard it had "bombed," but after seeing it, i didn't understand why. it was so good! maybe if i were alive when it came out, i might understand, but i still like it a lot!

reply

oh no. Do you know the bit where her husband was sending her to loads of people who kept giving her letters? I saw as far as where she was in this little house with a cowboy kinda guy (I'm not good with explaining things, sorry!) and he gave her a book but I wanted to know what happened after that.

reply

well she ends up having to break a code that spells out JONAH, which meant she then had the opportunity to play 'Black Jack' and win big. And she did and they drove off into the sunset.

Hope that helps!!

reply

It does thank you! I'm kinda sad I missed it now! :(

I think some of the brilliance in this movie can be paralleled to Bette's bomb in the late 90s, "Drowning Mona".

Black comedies are often misinterpreted for being a comedy or a drama or something inbetween and no one understands it. It's twisted, off-key, and therefore hilarious.

For me, part of the funniest moments in this movie are only Bette...the disposing of the body and the last fifteen minutes or so when Bette is sent on a 'goose hunt' that is almost as funny as a Lucille Ball episode.

I guess if you miss the comedy in that, then this movie would be terrible.

reply

I loved it, all the way from Bette's opening song - can that woman sing or what?

I'm surprised, looking back to when it was brand new, that Rip Torn ended up having a bigger career than Ken Wahl.

But yeah, great movie.

reply

I agree, this is a very good movie.

reply

I agree. Itwas a fun, silly fast moving film.

I just love the cat. He was beautiful and the way she carries him around was adorable.

reply

My feelings exactly! I enjoyed the movie, but Angus the cat made it special!
