on DVD?

Has ICFH come out on DVD? I have heard conflicting stories that it did but was discontinued or that it came out in Canada only. Does anyone know for sure?

thanks :)

I have written Paramount about this several times, but they never respoded.

But according to sources, it was never released....

"Unfortunately, it HAS been cancelled. Early this month, Martin Blythe of Paramount confirmed it in a post at DVDTalk. Paramount has taken this off of their July 2002 schedule because of those dreaded "clearance problems."

This is one of my favorite films. I really hope they get around to issuing it someday. My VHS copy is almost all worn out.

Well, I got my response....

Martin Blythe is a Sr. VP at Paramount home Entertainment. He writes....

no plans - clearances would be impossible

Oh Well.

Thankfully, those of us with Laserdiscs players are somewhat in luck since a Laserdisc was made. Unfortunately, it's hard as hell to find . . .

reply

Clearances?? I assume that means permission to use all of the film clips?

How does it work that this can be shown on television, has been released to video & laserdisc, but clearances for DVD are "impossible" to obtain?

reply

Because back then, rights issues weren't as stringent as they are now. Since the advent of DVD has made home movie collecting bigger than it ever has, studios are protecting their properties like crazy (there's money in them thar shiny frisbees!)

Paramount may have had permission back then, but the license probably expired years ago and to redraw it now in the digital age is probably a huge headache.

I can name one time when this type of issue came up. MGM pressed a special edition LD of Pink Floyd's The Wall, with commentary with the director Alan Parker and Dolby Digital sound. Right after the first pressing, MGM lost the license and the LD never received a second print. Then when the DVD was released by Columbia, the commentary track was by members of the band and the animator Gerald Scarfe. Also the Dolby Digital mix was discernably different. My guess is, MGM lost the rights to the film, but retained the rights on Alan Parker's commentary and the LD's Dolby Digital mix.

Just because one studio loses the rights to a film, doesn't mean existing copies in any format, have to be destroyed. They just can't make anymore.

Thanks for enlightening me on this. It's just one of those things where my common sense tells me different than what the complicated reality actually is (it's often like that with the legal system, isn't it?). I hope they put in the effort one of these days. My copy is pretty old.

Only thing I can suggest is contact a distributor who puts out these kind of genre films (ie Anchor Bay or Blue Underground just to name a few) and let them know you would be interested in purchasing this film.

Sometimes asking doesn't hurt. A lot of these companys count on consumer interest before putting out their products.

Hell, if Paramount won't do it maybe one of these company's would...
I already e-mailed quite a few.

maybe we should start an online petition.......

I just checked Amazon's Canadian site, and it says the DVD is slated to be released on Jan. 1, 2010! But it can be preordered now. :-/

I think they just through up an arbitary date because the title was cancelled and no ammended re-release date was ever issued. I have never heard of a distributor announcing a dvd release 5 years in advance.

And yes, that scene was hysterical.

I finally got a Laserdisc of this movie. It's not the best transfer and it's got no digital sound, but it's still a format that won't wear out (so long as it doesn't rot!)

I just got a DVD-R copy from a guy on eBay... Fortunately, the bid had closed and I'd PayPal'd him BEFORE someone turned him into the eBay cops and they removed/cancelled the item (and the guy's eBay account). It's a very clean, basic copy - probably from VHS.

And the movie is still a hoot! I hadn't seen it since renting it on VHS YEARS ago. Very funny clips and quite "cringe-worthy" in their awfulness... especially the musical number featuring all the people - including little kids - in blackface make-up... tapdancing with big, prop slices of watermelon?!? *LOL* Things have changed a LOT in this country, thankfully... Hard to believe something like that was EVER projected on a theater screen!

I have mine on dvdr from video tape, i try to do this with all of my rare videos since at some point the video will wear out, if taken care of the dvdr will likely out last me, comes in handy for backing up home movies as well, my video tape is still in like new condition, now that i have it backed up to dvdr guess I will put it on amazon or ebay since i don't really need it anymore.

by the way the above poster is correct, this film will never be released dvd due to many copyright problems for all the clips, and maybe also due to rights from the estates of John Candy and Gilda Radner, who knows all the mess that is involved.

Isnt it crazy how many films, tv shows, concerts , tons of great performances we all remember and love from childhood that will probably NEVER be available for commercial release due to rights, clearances and bunch of constipated lawyers / studio execs that sit around and play chess all day with peoples lives and careers?

I also think that the "blackface" musical scenes make this one WAY too hot to handle in the PC world we live in today .

So, instead Hwood treats us to such top shelf entertainment as Saw 12 & yet another crap remake.

I remember this film well from my teen years, 1982 being one of the best years of my life.

i have a nice quality dvd of it if interested

You're so right about this!! It seems to me the sole purpose of the copyright Nazis and money grubbers is to ensure that past works (especially music) remain buried if they don't get their exact exorbitant fee. God forbid some classic works might find a whole new audience with a little bit of exposure. They cut off their noses to spite their face.

Interestingly, it says on IMDB that Paramount had definite plans to release ICFH to DVD in 2002 before they cancelled. They even have a picture of the DVD artwork on this site.

I'm glad I kept my VHS copy from cable a long time ago. I will be burning it to DVD. Thanks again, Hollywood, for forcing fans to bootleg so you can complain about it.

This used to run on HBO all the time back in the 80's and I would watch it over and over and over and over. I recently found an .avi of it online so if you know the right places to look for it you can find it. I wouldn't pay anyone on ebay or any other site for this because that is a total ripoff. I'm so glad that I have an Xbox 360 with streaming video so I can watch it without having to burn it to a disc.

I bet the guys behind MST3K got a lot of inspiration from this movie. Shame the rights issues can't be cleared up.

I know this is an older post, but the film is also available in its entirety (a very good print) on YouTube:

(I chuckle when I think that YouTube didn't even exist when the OP posted back in '03!)
