In Memoriam: Rate Michelangelo Antonioni's Films

A sad day to open this board, but somebody has to do it (I guess).

Michelangelo Antonioni passed away. He was one of my favorite filmmakers...

In his memory I'm reposting this (long gone) thread from FG board.

Please rate the films you've seen (out of 10, or 4-stars system, or 'from best to worst'), post/add your comments, recommendations, etc. ANY feedback very welcome and much appreciated. Thanks for your participation.

My humble 'impressions' (rates) are added.

* - co-directed by Wim Wenders.

P.S. - As you can see I excluded his shorter films from this list. In case you've seen something else please feel free to add those titles to your rates. Thank you very much.

P.P.S. - This is actually a repost from FG board (deleted some time ago) and I apologize to all who already participated there. It would be really nice, if you could repeat the exercise here, in humble hope that this thread will 'live' a little longer. Thank you for your understanding.

RIP Michelangelo Antonioni!

I'm new to Antonioni, but he is quickly becoming a favorite. He has a lovely way of 'watching' his characters, and the brilliance of his shot compositions is hard for even me to miss!

I've only seen 3 of his films thus far:

Blow-Up 9/10
L'Avventura 10/10
La Notte 10/10

I'm looking forward to exploring more of his work.

It is almost too much to take to lose a second master filmmaker in such a short time. I had not yet started to explore his work when the news of his departure came over the radio. I have been in the last year watching and experiencing a great deal of unbelievable cinema from all parts of the globe. I have seen only three of his films. Michelangelo Antonioni first caught my attention when he was mentioned in a documentary The Z Channel a Magnificent Obsession. They showed some footage of Blowup. It is a sad thing to have someone like him pass before I even had time to really appreciate his greatness. But just as Bergman lives on through us so will Antonioni. I would hope that all of us would promote his work and make him aware to those just beginning to experience the joy of cinema as art.

I consider those who love great films as an extended family. We have our arguments and biased opinions. If they were not biased they would not be opinions. We have discussed and recommended his films. And now as a family mourn him together. May his next life be as fruitful as the one he spent with us.

Blowup
Zabriskie Point
Passenger

I watch a movie everyday. It helps keep reality away.

Really glad we agree (almost completely) on so many of them.

"Il Mistero di Oberwald (The Mystery of Oberwald, 1981) 10/10 - it's one of my favourite movies"

Yay! Great news. It's pretty amazing (to me) how 'overlooked' this film is. Yep, I also think it's an excellent one.

Al di là delle nuvole (Beyond the Clouds, 1995, co-d*) 2/10. The 2 is for both of Sophie Marceau's breasts. Yes, I have no shame, haha.

Professione: reporter (The Passenger, 1975) I own it so I'll probably give it a go in a few days.

Zabriskie Point (1970) 7/10

Blowup (1966) 10/10 among my favorite, favorite films.

Il Deserto rosso (The Red Desert, 1964) This is a film I've been dying to get a hold of somehow.

L'Eclisse (Eclipse, 1962) 10/10

La Notte (The Night, 1961) own it. I'm gonna watch it when I watch The Passenger.

L'Avventura (The Adventure, 1960)10/10

Cronaca di un amore (Story of a Love Affair, 1950) high on my to-see list.

So I've only seen 5, yet I've been incredibly impressed. I really look forward to seeing the rest of his work.

reply

Only 5 so far because I'm a dolt and missed the retrospective last summer... :(

Professione: reporter (The Passenger, 1975) 10/10
Blowup (1966) 9/10
L'Eclisse (Eclipse, 1962) 10/10
La Notte (The Night, 1961) 8/10
L'Avventura (The Adventure, 1960)10/10

...roughly... ah hell they might just as well all be 10/10, all of them blew me away, I suppose the 10/10s are the ones that I've been thinking about most... or something. Great director.

My dog has no nose.

As I said on Bergman's thread, so it goes here...

Identificazione di una donna (Identification of a Woman, 1983) I feel bad about how you know I feel about this film...
Professione: reporter (The Passenger, 1975) 9/10
Zabriskie Point (1970) I'll appreciate it someday, I hope.
Blowup (1966) 9/10
Il Deserto rosso (The Red Desert, 1964) In a matter of hours, at last... Oh, Michelangelo. Why does anticipating this feel so much different now?
L'Eclisse (Eclipse, 1962) 10/10
La Notte (The Night, 1961) 10/10
L'Avventura (The Adventure, 1960)10/10
Il Grido (The Cry, 1957) 7.5/10
Le Amiche (The Girlfriends, 1955) Caught it this week... when I started watching it, Antonioni was alive and well for all I knew. Before I finished it, I knew he was gone... Bizarre thing. I'll never know how to separate this film from that fact.
Cronaca di un amore (Story of a Love Affair, 1950) 6/10

Sorry I didn't write much... Once again I have barely been able to stand taking Antonioni on the heels of Bergman... It's "too much," but I'm happy to be in such fine company. Thanks and cheers, everyone reading and responding to this thread.

Thanks for more than I have words to say now, Michelangelo.

reply

Frustrating the way he's even mentioned in the same breath as Bergman right now, he was light years ahead of them all! Why mourn? Let this thread be a celebration!

I could not love Zabriskie Point. I am not against the things that were in discussion, but I could not conform to the compartmentalization of the film. Probably the duration of the first half was necessary to give the viewers a craving for freedom, but once I had seen the whole film, it became unwatchable for a second time. I loved the music though, but that is a completely different matter actually.
