POWERFUL

I would agree with your post title. I watched it several times when I rented the movie about 10 years ago, and I proceeded to borrow a VCR so I could connect it to my own VCR and record it. I hope it becomes available on DVD someday.

From start to end, the movie just draws you in and mesmerizes you, demanding that you continue to watch this pitiful young man's journey, even though you KNOW nothing good will come of it in the end--he is destined for heartbreak. In that sense, I find the movie is "true to life", whether you are gay or straight, male or female--I think many of us can relate to the sadsack protagonist.
