How about a US DVD release

Or at least a Region 0 version.

By far the best film I have seen on the topic. I have watched some of the Hollywood over-the-top crap, and still go back to watching this.

There is nothing to match:

The coldness of Billy.
The fear and desperation of Theresa.
The incompetence and arrogance of the military and political leaders, on both
sides.
The lack of respect, frustration, and anger with which the British military and
the civilian residents feel and show toward each other.

My VHS tape won't hold up for too many more years.

I would like to see the movie. Where did you record it from?

reply

I was starting to think that no one cared about this film any more.

I bought mine at Half.com a couple years ago. It's called Belfast Assassin - but it's the same movie. I don't know why they felt the need to change the name for the US.

I first saw it on PBS in the 80's, and that's how I knew about it. But I wouldn't expect to see it on TV again.

Get it. You will be impressed.

Do what most people in Britain and Australia do (and probably many other places) and buy a multi-region DVD player.

reply

Yeah, I'm going to look into it.

Until recently, I didn't know that they existed.

As I wrote above, if you're in the US, you can get a used VHS tape at Half.com. And as others have said, we could just buy multi-region DVD players, and then get the DVD at Amazon.co.uk.

You're absolutely right about that. By whatever title it's known, "Harry's Game" or "Belfast Assassin", it's the best movie ever made about the war in Ulster. And that's out of a field of 20-30 others, most of which I've seen. In the larger genre of political cinema, it's up there with "The Battle of Algiers".

In particular I like, that without ever approving of them, it gives the Irish Nationalists credit for being smart and tough. It is the same basic pov that made Gerald Seymour's IRA trilogy worth reading.

I'll have to read them someday.

I honestly don't know why I haven't yet.

Just got it, and I can't wait to read.
