Book vs. movie - Spoilers

I just read the book - finally, after having seen the movie many times over the last 25 years or so.

I found the movie to be very true to the book, dialogue, and all, except in a few minor areas.

I loved Derek Thompson as Billy Downs, but he couldn't look less like the description of him in the book. He's about 10 years older than in the book, and has bushy blonde hair and is very light. No matter, I just found it odd.

Also, in the book Harry's taken out by the soldiers and dies in one shot. The movie has him getting another final shot from Billy's Mrs.

I almost think that the first time that I saw this, that it ended with the soldiers shot, and then the credits. But in the version I own, it goes as above. Anyone know about this?

Thanks.

Also, in the book, it's, DOWNS, with no "E". There's even a part where they're saying it, and it's said specifically, that there's "no E".

Wow, I guess that this movie is past its prime.

No posts in almost a year. Maybe it's the subject matter. That's sad.

I read an abridged version of this book at school several months before the tv serial appeared and it was a rather faithful adaptation.

Its that man again!!

Yes, I thought so too. Just didn't understand the minor changes.

Well, we recorded this magnificent miniseries in 1983 when it was broadcasted by dutch television, and also in my VHS-version Harry gets wounded by the British sniper, says something and then gets killed by Mrs Downes.

It was played in one evening, so only at the end we saw the end titles and heard Clannad's music. I remember watching it with my parents and my brother, and from the bloody start it was gripping. We got so mad because of the cruelty, especially when families and innocents were involved. After 2,5 hours the ending came as a shock.
