I just saw this movie for the first time and I thought it was actually pretty good, I also didn't know that originally it was going to be another Wilder/Pryor teaming with the same director of Stir Crazy, but I liked it with Gilda Radner which happened to be Gene Wilder's wife (but not until 1984)

Would this probably have gotten a higher rating if it was with Richard Pryor instead of Gilda Radner, what do you think?

reply

This is one of my family's all time favorite comedy. The scene where the pilot dies in the airplane and Wilder has to fly is quite possibly one of the funniest moments all-time in movies.

"Don't tell me he's dead!"

WHY ARE YOU SCREAMING YOUR QUESTION IN ALL CAPS??

I like this movie, it's not Citizen Kane, but it is cute.

I've heard it was originally intended for Pryor, but if they plugged Radner into Pryor's role that was ONE MAJOR rewrite! I think maybe this Pryor rumor came from the tagline of the movie which referred to Stir Crazy.

Pryor, at that time, was not such a professional professional at the time, with the drugs and such interferring with his attendance, much less performance in his films.

Radner and Wilder met on this film, she fell head over heels and spent most of the movie chasing after him personally as well as in the film. They spent 5 years of great married life together until she died of cancer in 1989.

And yes, I LOVE that airplane scene! CLASSIC!

BECAUSE YOU TOUCH YOURSELF AT NIGHT!!! THAT'S WHY!!!

No, seriously, I have no idea. Everyone hates it? Everyone who?

I personally have always liked this film.

In fact, I'm about to search for the DVD right now - seriously.

They got the name of the film and the film poster all wrong with what the film is actually about. Perhaps that's why it didn't do well at the box office. The film is much like Silver Streak in that it's a serious film but has comedy there too! You wouldn't expect anything less with Wilder. I don't think it would have worked as well if Pryor was in it through out. I think Wilder gives the film a bit of charm, but the comedy aspect with a famous comedy actor for a thriller doesn't always sit well. If it was a serious film through out it with a different actor it may have been even better, or just another by the numbers thriller.

I watched it again recently since about 7 years ago, and I really enjoyed it. I had forgotten about most of it but remembered Wilder was on the run and he had a famous name. It's a shame Kathleen Quinlan isn't in the film much as she looked great. And seeing the police chief from Die Hard 3 as Stacy was funny.

It was just a little long, otherwise, it was interesting.

I like this movie. It has the tone of Hitchcock's movies and it has some funny lines and sight gags. Its villains are menacing (especially Richard Widsmark) and Gilda Radner and Gene Wilder have good chemistry. They both are good actors and have the gift of being funny and charming even in serious situations. The plot is intelligent and exciting, though some things are never explained.

reply

I've always liked it and agree with the last post.

reply

Count me in as a big fan of the film. I think it is very entertaining. For me Wilder is funny just looking at him. Yes it's somewhat like Silver Streak in the mixture of comedy and suspense, and it may have been a classic with Wilder and Pryor, but as it stands it's a good film.

Incidentally I read that Pryor dropped out because of his "accident" when he lit himself on fire.

reply

I forgot to add that even Siskel and Ebert gave this film Two thumbs up when it was released.

reply

I don't know. It certainly would have been funnier with Wilder and Pryor together again but as it stands it's a lively and entertaining comedy thriller with some fun moments.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

reply

I THINK IT IS wonderful

This is a film from my childhood. A great comedy that also works as a Hitchcockian mystery. And how can you resist the chemistry between Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner? This is a very entertaining, charming film - and the scene in the airplane with the dead pilot is classic.

reply

Same, I thought it was a nice film. Not amazing, but enjoyable.

It’s episode 24 of The CineFiles podcast! This time we discuss the pros and cons of crowdfunding your film. But first we talk about the films we’ve recently seen: ALTMAN, NASHVILLE, TANNER ’88, THE PLAYER, HANKY PANKY, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB, STARSHIP TROOPERS, AREA 51. We also get into the latest news coming out the Hollywood buzz machine (more Batman in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN? Are we getting a KING KONG VS GODZILLA?). Unfortunately Jeff Gallashaw couldn’t join us (he was off on a mission. Saving tribes in the Amazon and all that) so it’s just Andre and Eric this time. Bu that’s okay as there is no better person than Andre to explain the whole gist behind crowdfunding. He’s had a lot of experience with this. So listen and learn.

So please listen to or download episode 24 of the CineFiles Podcast. Slip on your best Hugh Hefner robe, light up that corn cob pipe and recline on your leather chair within the comfort of your private library. And please rate and comment on this ep in iTunes.
