I don't think that's true. There's plenty of films nowadays which run at more than 3 hours (just look at The Lord of the Ring films). So long as a film is telling a story and there aren't pointless scenes in it, I think it will always be interesting. To me this film never felt too long or boring in anyway, it always felt as though the story was progressing

Because it's so shocking, the movie makes you commit to it just so you can learn the circumstances behind his death, even though you're ready to check out during the third act. Without that scene, most people wouldn't have lasted by the second hour and Attenborough knew it.
