This is not a good film

Sorry it isn't. It won Best Picture. I would of said that it was a bad year but it won over "ET" and "TOOTSIE". This is a case where the Academy got it wrong again. No wonder THE AWARD SHOW no longer gets a huge audience. They award films most people never want to see.

It wasn't the best picture of 1982, but it was better than all the other nominees.

Epic, beautiful, inspiring, well written and of course Kngsley. One of the 5 best Biopics ever.

“Best biopic” is like “tasty tripe.” There’s no such thing. If a person interests you, READ about him or her.

So you liked Tootsie and ET better. Most people would disagree. Just saw Gandhi and I thought I might not like it that much, but it was a fantastic really well done film. Deserves to be on the top #200 right where it is, and definitely worthy of best picture Oscar.

It gets a lot of flak. I will defend it however - it does feel "epic" in its scale - which can't be said of a lot of modern films(even some pretending to be epics like The English Patient). I am surprised that it wasn't filmed in 70 mm. The film does have integrity about dealing with the tricky subject of colonialism and Gandhi. It's certainly a biopic that is more cinematic than many others. Also there's a superb performance from Kingsley.

On the subject of best picture Oscar for 1982 - well, I'm going to get a lot of flak for this - I'm not a fan of ET. It's too sentimental for one thing. The film never really gelled with me. Tootsie isn't that great a film as well. It's alright - but nothing special. People going on about Hoffman's performance and so on - well, two men in drag was done better in Some Like It Hot. To me - for that year - I'd go with Das Boot. That was the standout film of that year. I suppose you could also say Blade Runner - but that is one of those films that got critically reappraised.

You have a title to your comment, 'This is not a good film'. You are then apologising - to who no-one knows. The rest of your post is about "the" Academy and other movies released in 1982. This then brings me back to your post's title. Well, it it 100% opinion. The film is what it is.

It was made, released and, okay, was put to some vote. It so happens that it also educated millions of people - myself included - on a life that changed the course of history. Leaving that aside, allow me to give you a tip: if you choose to write a post and want to be taken seriously, you may want to.. err.. actually write about the movie at hand.

You may think that I am a fan of the movie (which I am) and that is why I am replying to you here i.e. in the way that I am. That is not the case. Your title piqued my curiosity so I wanted to read what someone else, i.e. you, had to say about it.

I am only too happy to read alternative - even opposing - points of view. Disagreement is to be expected. It is - at least partly - what life is about. It is at this level that I was disappointed.

I can not believe I've still not seen this highly rated movie. It looks as brilliant as it's rated. It's actually on television now but I have missed too much. I will sit and watch it soon. It's only 34 years old.
