On DVD now

I saw this film for sale on amazon. I was really excited. Apparently there are no extras and the film isn't even remastered but I'm still going to buy it.

reply

I will buy it too. I love this movie!

For anyone interested in purchasing this in America, check your local big DVD seller and seek out Mill Creek Entertainment's "Chilling Classics DVD Collection." It's one of those 50 movie packs that you can get for under $30 (I got mine at Best Buy for $20.) It includes Funeral Home as well a number of other rather rare horror flicks. Just in case you're interested and don't want to spend extra money a single disc of Funeral Home that is most likely in no better shape than Mill Creek's print (although, of course, it won't have that great poster art...)

Dear Flynn the Paradox Man: Methinks the 'film print' for FUNERAL HOME that's on the Mill Creek Chilling Classics 50-Pack is taken from the long out-of-print Paragon Video of FUNERAL HOME. I also think that's the same "master" for the single disc edition. Both reek of cheapness.

If ya wants to find a REAL version of FUNERAL HOME see if you can find the mid-1980s Paragon Video release. (In case you've never seen a Paragon video box they do look distinctive. They were based in Las Vegas, by the way). I do have an old Paragon Video of FUNERAL HOME that I bought used from my local Blockbuster many years ago. Still works fine. And it's not some 2nd generation dupe. Cost me all of $5. I'd bet it still wouldn't cost a lot if you found the original release on Amazon or Half.com or Ebay. Of course -- that is if you actually LIKE the movie. If you don't care for it then the El Cheapo DVD's will suffice . . . I reckon.

...and several months later...

Oh, I'm sure you're right about the "prints" on those DVDs. Most of these cheap DVD companies are pretty shady about their sources.
Yes, indeed, I do remember Paragon Video. They did have some great covers, didn't they? I still own loads of VHS tapes (so many that, along with thousands of books, I had to get a storage facility for them...) and occasionally will pick up a new one. I do like Funeral Home but not enough to pursue a tape of it. Now, if a special edition, remastered DVD comes out somewhere in the world, that would be worth seeking out. Course, if I happen to come across that great old Paragon tape in a second-hand store somewhere, I might just pick it up (providing that it costs less than 10 bucks...)

I'm thinking about buying the DVD off amazon but it's pretty cheap so I'm kind of weary. For those who bought it, can you tell me if it's worth it? Thanks.

reply

The version I bought was of very poor quality. It even had vertical lines--it must have been transferred from a bad video.

reply

Just be warned to anyone who hasn't bought any of these Mill Creek or Brentwood DVD sets- you get what you pay for. When you buy any of these sets you're risking the chance of not getting some of the right movies listed in the set, some films are the edited versions, plus really really bad picture and sound quality...
But, considering these sets can now be found for under $15, plus some of the films aren't available anywhere else it's sometimes worth the risk...

Dear smerd: I reckon that if either Mill Creek or Brentwood got hold of a tape that was still in good playable condition then their "transfer" would look okay on the DVD -- but then cramming a bunch on movies onto 1 disc couldn't help the picture and sound quality.

I should say I've been far more impressed with the quality of Mill Creek than Brentwood- considering some of the discs in the Mill Creek collections have 3 movies on one side, their quality is still better than what I've seen on the Brentwood ones which only have one film.
Again though It's been worth it for the Mill Creek for the movies that I haven't seen anywhere else.

Dear smerd: Do you recall a few of the movies you've seen on the Mill Creek DVD set that you haven't seen anywhere else?

For instance -- is the movie WITCHES' MOUNTAIN (1970-Spanish) on the DVD set?

-CG

reply

Yes, Witches Mountain is on the same side as Deep Red.

Dear smerd: HI. >>> What other movies have you seen on the DVD set that you've not seen on VHS?

*** A note regarding WITCHES' MOUNTAIN: I take it you've not seen this movie on VHS before -- but it was released on Unicorn Video in 1986 (in their embedded clamshell case; an embedded clamshell video box, in case you've not run across one, has the artwork sealed up on the front and back so you can't take it out for any reason unless you cut the box up. Most clamshell cases have insert artwork that's removable just in case you'd want to take it out for whatever reason).

I have one of these Unicorns. It's worth at least $100 in half-way decent shape. The hard part is just finding one.

I just meant available anywhere else on DVD, and in these 50 packs it makes it more affordable for people to see some of these movies for the first time. Of course some of the films are available on better quality DVDs(Bad Taste, Deep Red), but there are some in the set that you can at least view once without having to spend big bucks on a VHS if you end up not liking the film. I'd rather blind buy 50 movies for under $20, than one over $20.

reply

Dear smerd: That's why the Mill Creek and Brentwood people are still pumping out those inexpensive DVD sets.

'Cause you can get a whole bunch of movies cheap and even if you don't like half of them, well . . . they were still cheap!

But for anyone who's a serious video collector you'll never see them owning a Mill Creek or Brentwood DVD set. They'd much rather have the tape and a video box with groovy artwork.

Trust Me. :)

Speaking of the box-set movies, some movies are VHS transfers and some are from bad prints that needs restoration especially the Grindhouse Experience sets. Even if the discs are played on your Blu-ray player, the upconversion is okay but not great. You get what you pay for.

reply

Dear jimp: HI. Videos are still mighty.

Especially with a good industrial VCR to play them on.

I admit it's a LOT cheaper to buy some of those inexpensive box sets -- but they're worthless.

I bet I could sell a used WITCHES' MOUNTAIN on Unicorn Video from 1986 for oodles more money than someone else could sell used one of those El Cheapo box sets.

How true, you gets what you pays for.

Amen.
