I remember only scattered fractions of this, but for some reason I thought Ritter made this much closer to 1990. I thought i remembered seeing it as an after school special on CBS or ABC or something.

No I remember seeing a 'rebroadcast' when I was a little kid. I was excited because pre-DVD/pre Amazon we had to videotape TV movies.

I remember renting it on video cassette multiple times in the early-mid '80s -- definitely a childhood favourite, although nowadays I only remember scattered moments.
