Without Brian Dennehy this movie is just average

Another milktoast actor in place of Dennehy and you have just another average Stallone film.

reply

WITHOUT STALLONE,NOBODY WOULD HAVE SEEN,NOR REMEMBER THIS MOVIE.๐Ÿ˜‰

reply

Yeah his acting is great, but Dennehy is just the perfect counterpart...big barell like body, massive skull, a intensity that matches Stallones.

I was trying to think of other actors who could have filled the role...but came up short.

George Kennedy 15 years younger is all I could think of.

reply

I always thought Crenna lifted the film as well.

reply

Agreed.

reply

Hated Crenna in this. He seemed to spend the whole movie constantly warning Dennehy about Rambo, his skills, his abilities etc in a very over-dramatic fashion.

Even his entrance with the line " I made him" is over the top.

But also lines like " You don't seem to know what you're dealing with", and especially the line about sending a good supply of body bags.

Maybe its not all Crenna's fault, his dialogue is very silly. But Crenna seemed to go foe a very hammy delivery of the script, and not at all realistic.

Dennehy was superb though.

reply

It was the 80s!

Crenna I believe was a very last minute replacement, had to be fed his lines.

I believe the original actor was Kirk Douglas who wanted a more prominent role and wanted Rambo to die.

Years later he ran into Sly and they had a laugh about First Blood (I believe this happened between Rambo 3 and 4), he told him something like you would have lost a lot of money if you had agreed to my ending, *but* artistically I am still right, you should have died at the end of the first movie.

reply

I don't agree. It would not have been as entertaining without Galt.

So you are saying Dennehy was a milk toast?

reply

Disagree. I'm a bigger fan of Dennehy than I am of Stallone, but in this film, even Dennehy could have been replaced.

This was actually a perfect vehicle for Stallone with his mumbling delivery and his steroid physique.

reply

With who?

reply

Don't know. The point is that as big a fan I am of Dennehy, I believe his character (or Crenna's) could have been subbed with another actor (who isn't important) and this particular movie would have been just as good or almost as good. I can't say the same about Stallone in this. Stallone is no classic thespian by any stretch nor am I a fan of his in general, but he was uniquely perfect for this particular role.

reply

Not at all, Stallone, Crenna and pretty much the whole damn cast was on point. Dennehy made a great Teasle but he by no means carried the film.

reply

I'm not saying Dennehy CARRIED the film, but if you have a sub-par actor, or a actor of less intensity in that role, Rambo's response becomes less believable.

Again, I can't think of a better actor to fill that role.

reply

I thought Stallone gave a good performance in First Blood as did Crenna, the ending scene was Stallone at his finest aside from maybe the Rocky franchise. Dennehy as I said was a great Teasle and you may be right that he was the best choice for Teasle but I don't think the film would have fallen apart without Dennehy

reply

Dennehy was terrific in this but itโ€™s such a great story that I think it could have gotten away with a lesser actor

reply

Someone who I don't think gets enough credit is Richard Crenna, in the final scene he looks like he is about to break down into tears along with Rambo but he holds it back because he knows he has to maintain a professional distance with him and he never breaks it. Great acting and the man didn't say a damn word.
