A new more faithful adaptation of the book is needed.

I don't know whether Stallone holds the rights to everything Rambo and First Blood book, but I wish someone made a more faithful adaptation of the Morrell's novel. People who've read the book know what I mean, so I won't spoil it. I just wish someone moved away from the Reaganite crap version we got. It would make a nice indie period piece.

Aside from the ending, the events of both the movie and the book are pretty similar. The main differences are the characters of Rambo, Teasle and Trautman. The reason it was changed was because the movie was made long after the war was over while the book was written when the war was winding down and our perception of the war had changed by 1982 and we realized how poorly we treated the soldiers. As for it being "Reaganite" I very much disagree with you there, the movie is still depressing as sh!t, the sequel however I'll give you that.

So ending, MAIN characters are different, the time when it's set is different, but the events are pretty similar (and they are certainly not BTW). Do you sometimes read back yourself what you post, man?

reply

Ummmm the escape from the station, the chase through the woods, returning to the town to settle the score with teasle are in the book, again it’s the characters that were changed the stuff that happened was pretty similar

reply

well characters are the most important thing. Plot points are different, but compare the consequences, the body count, the nature of the main character Rambo, who is way more out of whack than Sly's version, etc.

reply

So you would want a movie where the protagonist kills a bunch of cops?

reply

well, you've heard of a notion of the antihero I hope.

reply

Ummmmm yeah I have and I have a hard time believing that people are going to tune into a movie where the person they are supposed to root for is murdering police officers, some of which had nothing to do with the discrimination against the character. Rambo was a borderline villain in the book.

reply

I probably would have agreed at one point but I do like that Rambo survives in the film. I like that the redneck cops and half weekend warriors didn't get their victory. It also means Rambo gets to survive to tell his story - I know that isn't really how it goes in the film series but in real life, the media would have been all over the story and Rambo would have been in demand for interviews etc.

reply

Eh it was never about victory, it was about ending the situation before someone else got hurt, there’s no way Rambo could have possibly won, even if he defeated Teasle he’d go down as a psychopath killer and Teasle would have been the hero

reply

I don't know. I think it all started because Teasle wanted to throw his weight around, Rambo thought fuck it and pushed back. After that Teasle's men go full blown Police brutality and Rambo outmatches them.

At that point it becomes a huge cover up operation by Teasle to get Rambo before he is able to tell his side of the story. The National Guardsman can't wait to use the bazooka when Rambo is holed up in the old mine for example it is a game for them until Rambo shows them he can shoot back anyway.

The irony about Rambo in the films is he is supposed to be Special Forces but he fights in a very clumsy way, Special Forces are very subtle, they don't engage in pitched battles like Rambo does, they are stealthy. It's just a film I know.

reply

I agree. I would like that. Though maybe I can be content with the Tommy Lee Jones film The Hunted which is First Blood the book but with Teasle and Trautman put into Tommy Lee Jones' character.

reply

Wouldn’t lend itself to sequels, unless John becomes a zombie.

reply

Don't take this the wrong way but neither me or the TC want remakes of the Rambo movies. What we want is a more faithful adaptation of the book where Teasle is sympathetic, Rambo is so messed up he kills all of Teasle's men along with his stepfather who had all the dogs, and Rambo and Teasle die but let go of their hatred of each other right before they do so.

reply

I'd be down. Make it a 5-6 episode miniseries.

reply

A faithful to the character and story miniseries could be very interesting

Now...who to cast as Rambo?

reply

I agree. In the book Rambo was the bad guy even if he was at times shown in a sympathetic manner.

reply

If the same can be done for Death Wish then anything's possible.

reply

A while back I found there was a movie that was basically Rambo done more like the book. It's called the Hunted and stars Tommy Lee Jones who is both the Teasle and Trautman character.
