How did Stallone not get an Oscar for this film?

Or at least a nomination. His performance is outstanding, no one else could have played Rambo as perfect and as convincingly as Stallone! Especially the famous speech at the end. As funny as I did find it at times, I did feel Rambo's pain and that was all due to Stallone's convincing performance.
I feel Stallone has never gotten the respect he deserves by the Academy. There are even other films I could have seen him get a nomination for. Cop Land and even Rocky 2 and 5 to name a few. But that's my opinion at the end of the day.

Yea, I agree. I remember renting it on vcr and thinking. Stallone almost made me cry. (Scene at end with Richard Crenna) Love his performance. But I think his 'action star' status hurts with real critical acclaim

Frankly autocorrect, I'm getting a little tired of your shirt

Yeah, same here, that scene to this day, STILL gives me chills, such an intense scene. I agree, OP, Stallone should've at least garnered an Oscar nomination for his performance in this film. Hands down, one of his BEST, if not his best, same goes for his performances in Cop Land, F.I.S.T., and most of the Rocky films.

because the character was dumb and the whole point of the movie was childish. i want some food so im gonna kill everybody and not take prison food. come on son you know this movie was dumb. Had it been corrupt cops killing people or something then i could justify rambos actions.

reply

Are you retarded??? Rambo didn't kill anyone at all in the film, the only death was a result of an over zealous person not wearing their seat belt in a Helicopter and Rambo declaring war on a town of cops had nothing to do with food at all. It had to do with his rights as a human being to be in that town to get something to eat and it had to do with his mental state as a haunted soldier who was misunderstood. For someone to call a movie like First Blood dumb and childish is very ignorant and naive because you obviously can't comprehend the message behind it.

reply

I think the cops on the patrol chasing Rambo on the truck died when the car hit another one which was stopped and *beep* exploded.

reply

Not likely, the police car had only minor damage and the other one exploded.

Wow, what a twit. You clearly didn't even understand anything that was happening in the film.

reply

PTSD, google it. You can also try, shell shock, combat fatigue, combat stress reaction, etc.

Doesn't hurt to understand the world a little more, history & science are your friends.

reply

I was literally going to tell him to google PTSD too. That guy is a *beep* idiot who missed the point of the movie. John was not a sane man

reply

Did you watch the movie or just the trailer action shots???

He did not kill anyone so where do you get the whole, "so I'm gonna kill everybody" statement from???

Try watching the movie, or at least this time pay attention and try to understand what it is about.

The book is actually very good as well. Now, in the book Rambo kills a few people.

With all the movies that came out that year I can understand why it wasn't nominated. This movie is good but it's no Gandhi.

"You want me to roll 6,000 of these!? What? Should I quit my job!?" George Costanza, Seinfeld

reply

Dose anyone even remember Gandhi. I mean the movie. Not the real life person.

reply

What kind of question is that? It got 8 oscars, it is in the top 250, etc..

reply

But the question still stands: as of today, August 19, 2020, does anyone give a DAMN about the film, Ghandi?

Rhetorical question. You could not pay me to watch that film. See, I already knew all about Mahatma Ghandi when it was released. I also knew all about WWII, so I’ll never watch Schindler’s List.

But I knew nothing about John Rambo. So I have this film in my video library.

reply

I've never seen the movie Ghandi. As far as I know, no one I know has seen Ghandi. I've never had discussion or heard references or quotes from Ghandi in any social interaction.

First Blood was relevant, especially in its time and Rambo is still very much a part of our culture today.

I think Stallone is an underrated actor, even when he plays tough guy roles, he somehow is able to inject his characters with believable humanity and vulnerability. I cannot see other action stars like Schwarzenegger play many of Stallone's roles. When he tried something different, out of his comfort zone and gives a performance of a lifetime, he is still unrecognized or ignored. So why bother playing other than a typical action star? It's too bad because I think he had the potential to have been a really good dramatic actor if only he was given the chance.

reply

Rocky V lolol? HORRIBLE movie, possibly the worst of his career...looking back, it's amazing that it got green-lighted it was so bad. Was the 1st pebble in an avalanche of awful films that eventually buried Stallone's career.

reply

possibly the worst of his career

As bad as Rocky V is, it's by far not his worst. Not when there's Rhinestone, easily his worst movie by far. Also i think Driven, D-Tox and Daylight are worse than Rocky V, imo.

reply

You obviously haven't seen Rocky IV.

reply

"Buried his career!" BWAH-HA-HAHAHAHAHA!!!!
And for his very next movie after this comment was posted, (Creed) Stallone won the Golden Globe for Best Actor and got nominated for the Oscar!

reply

It's why i have no respect or interest in the oscars. A performance like Stallone gave is definitely worthy of at least a nomination. If De Niro, Dustin Hoffman or some other 'serious' actor had done it, it would have been guaranteed an oscar nom.

the academy awards are an absolute joke, and any serious film fan knows it.

I agree. Though I think them snubbing Sylvester Stallone for F.I.S.T is an even worse crime than him not getting nominated for First Blood.

If you hate the Amazing Spider-Man movies, you are on my ignore list.

Agreed, he was excellent in F.I.S.T. 

Can you name a movie with a similar theme and tone that got Oscar attention. This is in my top 10 of all time and watch it every time it is on TV so I am not dissing it.
