Can't they do a sequel and see what the characters are doing 40 years later? Also its a chance to have more racial diversity that the original lacks

Problem with a sequel is we already knew what the characters were doing in the future due to the little end credits scene that filled us in . That said, I still would have liked a sequel to Fast Times and Dazed and Confused
