Why is Damone Hanging Out With a Dorky Loser?

The topic on the authenticity and validity on Damone's "expertise" and "coolness" has been discussed in multiple threads, but his friendship with Mike is the biggest red flag of all, yet no one seems to be pointing it out...

You just gotta wonder, why is this smooth talking, supposed know-it-all "ladies man" hanging out with a wimpy, dork loser ("loser" in the traditional high-school sense)? Other than Mark, you never see Damone hanging out with friends and he always seems to be alone. When Mark is out on his date, which we can only assume it's a weekend night, instead of being out with buddies, a girl, or out chasing tail, Damone is in his room eating and watching tv.

So it's like Damone clung on to the first person who respected and admired him. Someone who thought he was more experienced and bigger than he really was. On the plus side, it did seem Damone was genuinely interested in helping his buddy out, and he feel regret and remorse for the guilty thing he did. Since he probably never really had those experiences before, it was hard for him to deny the temptation and he just buckled under pressure (not saying it was a justified excuse).

The fonz kid looked smart, probably did Damone's homework.

Mark wasn't no slouch either. he confronted damone and was gonna put an ass whippin on him too.. and didn't back down. gotta give him some credit there..

Nobody really likes Damone deep down. Look at the younger kids reaction to him when he brags. The guy has probably been friends with Rat for years. The guy wears purple knit socks and a keyboard scarf. That's enough for me to steer clear of this guy.

Damone was a bit of a loser himself IMHO.

Damone was a dorky loser. Didn't even have a real legal job. Ratner was a working man.

reply

Rat's not a loser. He's a nice polite kid!

Rat was too nice. I always get frustrated when Stacey is practically giving herself to him and has him unzip her dress.

Then he wusses out and says his sister needs her car back.

Duuuude she's making the move, taking all of the work out of it for u!

But hey I guess that's why they end up in a ltr while Danone just had a pathetic hookup with her.

reply

Believe it or not the movie was based off of a book. In the book, Damone had just moved from Philadelphia and worked a summer job with Rat. That is why they were friends.

Damone is dorky also. He pretends to be a big man on campus.

I saw it in theaters, and for all these years, I had no idea anybody would consider Damone to be legit cool. He thought he was cool, he had some good ideas on how to be cool, but he was a walking joke. I knew that even when I myself was a little 13 year old dork.
