TV version and theatrical version

So, I just recently purchased the Criterion edition of Fanny and Alexander, which contains both the theatrical and the television cuts of Bergmans film, as well as his Making Of. I haven't yet seen Fanny and Alexander, and am wondering where to start. Is it better to watch the television cut or the theatrical cut first? Obviously, if I watch the television cut I'll be watching it in several sittings, so consider that in your answer.

Anyway, thanks in advance to any repliers, and I would love some advice on where to start with another Bergman classic!

I would start with the theatrical version and then the TV version. If you watch them the other way around you might end up liking the theatrical version less than you would have, since it is by definition a less complete vision in comparison.

As for what to watch next, I would say Scenes from a Marriage. It's another miniseries cut down to feature length, and the Criterion release has both versions. I've only seen the theatrical version, but it is as moving, thoughtful, and gut-wrenching as any film about love and marriage you're likely to see. It's considerably less accessible than Fanny and Alexander, but every bit as rewarding.

As the longer television version is broken up into several 'acts,' it is surprisingly easy to watch despite its length, because of the natural pauses in the unfolding of the story.

With SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE I opted for the longer version first, in case I didn't want to watch the shorter version (which turned out to be the case - Unlike F&A, SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT and several others, but like HOUR OF THE WOLF and PASSION OF ANNA, SCENES is not a Bergman film I expect to revisit).
