How can I get a hold of this film?

Hello,

I remember seeing this film on Norwegian TV back in 1987. It was in 2 episodes I believe. Do any of you know how I can get a hold of this film now? Amazon.com does not have it. Neither does Barnes & Nobles. It's my understanding that it's only available in VHS format, which is OK, but I might get the problem with the difference in format between U.S. Standard and European Standard.

DVD is never a problem though.

Would be very thankful if I could get an answer to this. I've been wanting that film since I first saw it - and it's particularly interesting since I remember so well when all this happened as I was only 14 years old.

Have a great day everyone!

Hey, I've been trying to get ahold of this movie, too. I read Mailer's book, then read Mikal's book, then actually met Mikal a few years ago. Now I'm trying to get ahold of the movie - did you find anything?

Hi Sandi,
I was one of the cast & though I had the video which included my name on the credits at that time, my ex-wife now has it so I wanted to buy a copy myself.
I played the officer who met Eli Wallach & Christine Lahti at Control One at the prison which is the Utah State Prison nicknamed "Point of the Mountain." I also was one of the officers who strapped Gary to the Execution Chair & was the officer who first said goodbye to him at the party the night before the execution. I was sitting next to the record player & Tommy Lee Jones was sitting next to me, but even though Freddie Francis had done a closeup of Gary & me it was cut short since I had said, "Goodbye Gary," & Tommie Lee Jones said, "Goodbye Rodrigues." This part was cut short since they changed a previous scene in the film where I spoke to Gary through a windowed door telling him to "Pick up the phone." For whatever reason, when they got back to Hollywood they dubbed some foreign guys voice instead of mine, rather than fly me to Hollywood to redo the voice. So... the voice isn't mine & that is why they cut the other scene short where Gary & I said goodbye.

Just figured I'd include this additional information for you.

I was an actual Corrections Officer at Utah State Prison & talked my way into getting the part which Eli Wallach told me that regular professional actors would have killed to get my part. However, I took the initiative & I got it. It was quite enjoyable working with these people who work towards reaching perfection, rather than mediocrity. And for certain, Tommy Lee Jones, Rosanna Arquette, Eli Wallach & Christine Lahti are really great professionals.

It was quite hard to find the original Full Copy, rather than the shortened copy, but I did finally get it through either eBay or Amazon, I forget which one it was.

You might want to check both of these sites periodically. Watch out on the auctions though, because quite often bidders push the price up way too high.

Also, if you believe you've found a video of it & you want the long version, make certain that the seller guarantees it IS the Full Version. This seems to have become a collector's film & is not always easy to find. I had to send the first one back & bought it from another person & I was lucky & got a good quality VHS tape, like new.

If you are interested in getting the Hard Cover book, the Soft Cover book AND there is an audio, which I also purchased you might want to look this up on the Internet also. As far as the European Copy I don't really know the availability of it.

Be careful of crooks also. I once was taken for $154.00 by a couple from Iowa, here in the USA on eBay. They never sent ANY videos & I had paid for several.

Take care. Hope you enjoyed the extra info I included in this email to you.

There are 2 versions of this film. The European version has graphic nude scenes which were not shown in the American television version. I have seen both versions. There is no difference between them except for the nudity involved. I hope this helps in deciding which version you want to collect.

Slight correction on the above comment. There is more of a difference than just nude scenes. In the European version it was shortened by around an hour or so. If you can find the TV version, it is much more detailed and the better version, in my opinion.

Thanks for noting the differences ... I've been waiting for the DVD release as well but it doesn't look like it'll be released any time soon. I got a hold of the 2 vhs versions many years ago which have been tucked away & completely forgotten about. One says it's the European version, the other says 185 mins - I take it this is the longer version? .... But the European version says it's 135 minutes. So there must more than the nudity scene that was edited out? Until the official dvd is released, I think I'll convert them to dvd as well just for safe-keeping. Thanks
