WARNING, SPOILER ALERT: 'Please! Please, you must come quick!'...

..."There's a woman lying dead out on the moors!". Was this a possible red herring for us, the audience? That's not Jane Birkin's voice we hear but, Maggie Smith's!

reply

How do you know that is Maggie Smith's voice and not Jane Birkin's? I don't think there's any hidden clue there.

reply

Sounds like Maggie Smith to me too. I believe OP is correct. Misdirection.

I'll have to listen to it again, but I think it sounded like Birken. I suppose it could have been anyone, really, doing a voice over. If it's meant to sound like Smith, that would suggest that you are supposed to think that Smith could be the one involved in Alice Ruber's death. But, how would you link Smith to the Moors murder? I think the OP is hearing something that is not there, but I'll listen to it again.

I've seen this movie at least a thousand times and it is not Birken's voice. It sounds like Maggie's voice but she disguised it a bit.

I wonder if it is possible that Maggie Smith came into the studio to loop some lines (almost certainly a necessity since a number of the scenes were filmed outdoors on location) and whoever was directing the looping session realized they didn't have a decent take of the "woman on the moors" line. So while MS was in the booth they asked her to do it.

Otherwise maybe it's just some anonymous actress whom they hired specifically because she didn't sound like Jane Birkin.

Being an American, I have a hard time determining that the off camera voice was Maggie Smith and not Jane Birkin.

reply

Sounds to me like Christine (Jane), in a slight variant of the screaming voice she used in her fake-fights with Patrick

Added to which, she may well have been purposely disguising her own voice at that point
