Personally think this is better than 2 and 3

My favorite horror movie. Scared the hell out of me when i first saw it

reply

I watched it recently for the first time
Man that cellar scene and the trees was creepy.

reply

those bitches be witches be scary af man

reply

Yeah.

The second in particular was too goofy for me. Army Of Darkness was okay.

reply

The difference between the first two Evil Deads is like the difference between Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. Bruce had humour but it was dry and black humour.

reply

I always skip ED 2 when I watch them, too goofy for me overall even if there are some hilarious moments. I like the first one the best and then AOD second.

reply

You find part 2 too goofy but you're okay with part 3?

reply

I WAS ABOUT TO SAY THAT...THEN I SAW YOUR COMMENT...CHICH HAD BROUGHT ME HERE TO BEGIN WITH...I AGREE.

reply

Yes, I am perfectly okay with AOD.

Thank you for asking.

I mean, there are mini Ashes in the movie that he fights with. Ash fights with a second head that is attached to his body. His face gets sucked in into the book and he gets a long face. The entire final battle in against skeltons who have created their own weapons. I find part 3 to be way more goofy. And it's not even a horror.

AOD is slapstick in parts and didn't work for me. I recently purchased it with intent on giving it a second viewing to see if the 10+ years changes anything. I just can't hype myself up for it after being reminded of those scenes.

reply

I like it but I don't love it. It's definitely the weakest in the trilogy for me.

To answer your question honestly, I don't quite know why I prefer ED and AOD but there's just something about ED 2 that doesn't sit right with me. They're all silly in their own right, especially the first film, but I just prefer them both to ED 2.

It might be something to do with nostalgia because I saw AOD back in 1995 and thought it was hilarious, all the while having no clue that it was connected to Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2, I was only 8 years after all. Then in 2003 I hired out the first and second films and watched them back to back, I much preferred the first one despite the terrible special effects and acting and just all round silliness. It did scare me though and all the obvious jump scares worked a treat and had me squirming back into my seat. Around that time I had access to the internet as well and found out that AOD was the third film in the series and it blew my mind because I remembered watching it as a kid and loving it, so I hired it out again and it still gave me tremendous lols.

reply

It probably is nostalgia for you. Army of Darkness is way more comical and slapstick in comparison to part 2.

reply

this is the best, scariest and most impressive. the rest are good too.

I remember not liking The Evil Dead 2 the only time I saw it. I didn't like the way it descended into comedy.

I know it wouldn't be the only horror series to start as a straight up horror and get more campy as the sequels went on. But this was so direct. The first was actually a legitimate horror movie and a very decent one. The second stopped trying and went straight for slapstick.

I did like Armies Of Darkness and the Ash vs The Evil Dead TV series. So maybe would enjoy the second one more if I watched it again. But I just wasn't expecting it to go so stupid so quickly.

The original certainly stands on it's own in the series.

reply

I've always liked this one the best.

reply

I always go back and forth on my favorite.

The first has that raw, low budget horror vibe I really enjoy. It's played quite straight with only an inkling of comedy and does so much with so little.

The second has much better acting and production values with the humor being done very well (it's one of my favorite horror-comedies). But the comedy aspect does detract from the horror. It's absolutely the better film (on a technical level at least), but sometimes I want straight horror.

As for the third...I haven't watched it in a long time, it strayed too far from Horror for me and has always been my least favorite of the three.

reply

This is the best of the original three.
