I came here to comment about this same topic. I have loved this film for years and have always been familiar with the US version. (The dvd for North America is merely a direct rip of the US VHS) While living in Germany I saw this in a Video store and rented it to show some friends there, and that version is quite different! It's mainly the sex scenes, which are much more graphic. In the beginning when Thomas is watching his friend Charly have sex with the girl on the floor, you can clearly see Charly's erection, and it appears that the intercourse is unsimulated. The other sex scenes were more graphic too, but that one stands out the most. The director, Walter Bannert was known for making teen exploitation comedies such as "Herzklopfen," also starring the late Nikolas Vogel, which is kind of like Germany's version of films like "Last American Virgin." I'm guessing the exploitative elements were added to attract a youth crowd that might have no interest in War history. Anyway those scenes seemed strangely out of place. I also recall an additional scene of dialogue in that version. Anyway there is no Euro dvd release of "Die Erben" as of yet, but I'm willing to bet that if there is one, it will be the censored version as well, as these are different, less permissive times. (I'm not sure the actors were over 17.)
