Toxin given Hoyt Axton

What was the toxin given Hoyt Axton that caused his abdominal cavity to explode?
I've seen several references to this phenomenon in other locations, associated with biohazards, but I've never read any explanations.

The pathologist that Castle recommends to Harriet says that the substance found in the carcusses is some sort of botulism, an extrmely deadly poison. I assume that this is the substance that is put on Morgan's toothbrush.

I saw this twice on HBO when I was a kid and that scene has stayed with me my whole life. All this time I never thought that the poison made him explode. Rather I thought he was bleeding internally and would have died no matter what.

However he happens to stumble onto that metal fence post, which opens him up, explosively.

Me too! I saw this when I was young and that scene alone was so powerful, I still think about it every now and then. In fact, that's why I was looking at the discussion board for the film; I couldn't even remember the name of it, but some internet searching brought me here.

This scene is what I remember most about this movie. I saw it when I was 12 years old, a year after it was released. To this day I can still vividly remember that specific scene. Heh...
