Not A Good DVD Transfer

I've only seen one copy of the DVD and it has a pretty bad transfer. The image is stretched to appear as 1.85:1 and everything is fat and squat. I have a player that has a manual X/Y adjustment and have "squeezed" the picture until it looked normal. Seems as if it is 4x3 (standard TV aspect). I can view this movie correctly but, the average consumer can't. I've written Columbia/TriStar about this and hope they'll respond. If anyone has seen a good copy of this DVD, post your comments. This is a good forum to inform others.

I wrote Universal about their messed up transfer of "Monty Python's Meaning Of Life". I also wrote DVD Savant and he altered his review to include that. Eventually, Universal released a better tranfer but, you had to know and write them to exchange copies. A very quiet recall but, one none the less. Always write to studios and start the ball rolling. Never settle for a half-assed effort of even the most marginal release.

On most DVD players, there is an option to format the player to a 16:9 tv. For 4:3 tvs, just put it on 16:9!

That didn't work. When I did it, the image was stretched out vertically. We have to E-mail Criterion or somebody to put out a good version of this DVD. I can't live with this DVD. It's unbearable to watch.

it was meant to look that way. although it is quite horrible looking, it gives light to the lifestyle of the Blands. i dig it. great flick.

I think the poster above may have been right. I used to have this on VHS and the picture quality was nothing to write home about.

I saw the same stretched out quality, and did my best to adjust it. The funny thing is, the case said it was 1.85:1, but other discs with same aspect ratio don't seem to have as wide an image. It actually looked like it was somewhere between 1.85 & 2.35, but I've never heard of anything being released that way. It might have been a simple 2:1 image, but it's certainly strange for it to be transferred like that.

It may be possible to rip the movie, then use a program called ifoedit to correct the aspect ratio. Has anyone tried that?

{update)

Evidently not. However, if you rip it to mkv using MakeMKV, then use MKVMerge GUI, you can remux it and force the aspect ratio to 1.50:1 Then you can play the mkv on a media player. 1.50:1 didn't quite get a perfect circle on my TV, but the TV geometry may not be perfect (it's a CRT TV, not a fixed-pixel display).

The new blu-ray corrects the problem and makes the film look every bit like it did upon release.
