I liked the first and last 10 minutes (not counting the credits)

Otherwise this one has always seemed to me a mediocre kiddie movie. I prefer Close Encounters, which I felt initially boring as a teenager, but when I grew up, learned to appreciate its strengths. E.T. OTOH, has stayed always the same from the first screening in 1982. I have given another chance to it from time to time, but I always end up watching only the first and last 10 minutes...

That's all the Eliot-ET bonding time. The movie works because the alien is relatable, and a big part of that is allowing the wonder of the universe (healing finger, mysterious lights, spaceships), be kinda everyday (friendship, communication, understanding). I think it's pretty great end-to-end.
