over-populated garden painting?

Does anybody know the painter/title of "the over-populated garden painting" from Mr Herberts collection Neville presents to mrs. Herbert?

reply

The painting is "Allegory for Newton's Theory of Optics" by Januarius Zick, one of the most influential painters and architects of the late Baroque period in Germany. An admittedly poor-quality scan of it can be found at:

A fitting example for those with "an interest in the pictorial conceipt." Take a look at it again and ask yourself, as Mr. Neville asks Mrs. Herbert, "Do you think that murder is being prepared?"

Thanks-- it is really impressive that you could produce the image with information. Just saw Draughstman and Z-O-O at the Beverly theater in LA and... NOBODY was there; I mean like maybe no more than 3 dozen people. Great movies.

Funny that Januarius Zick wasn't even born until 1730, while the action of the film takes place in 1694. I thought Greenaway would have paid closer attention to continuity.
