Why is Eddie getting married?

I watched the film two days ago for the first time in nearly 8 years. Maybe it went by me, but I still couldn't figure out why Eddie and (the unseen) Elise were going to get married. He didn't seem to have any deep feelings for her and since we don't see her, we never know what she thinks about him. The football quiz appears to be the most important part of their relationship. I don't recall any dialogue about her being pregnant, which would've been reason enough in 1959 to get hitched. Wait, she couldn't have been pregnant (by him, at least) because he said he was a virgin! He didn't even seem to have a job. Any answers?

Because it's the 1950s, they've been dating a long time, and it's time to get married. Probably the same reasons Beth and Shrievie got married.

reply

Exactly. It's what you do.

reply

I don't think he quite knows himself except that yes, it's probably the done thing.

reply

Yes, as the others said, it was the thing to do in the '50s.

As to how Elise feels about Eddie -- well, she did agree to take the quiz, right? And she fought to get credit for the Alan Ameche question. That tells you something.

A year and a third later, thanks for the replies. Gee, what a marriage, staring at each other much of the time. Eddie only comes alive during football season. And like I said before, he didn't appear to be employed. What, his mother was going to pay the freight?
