What are some movies that I should see before seeing this film in order to really get the parodies? I assume Maltese Falcon & Big Sleep, but are there any others I should watch?

Do what you want of course, but I don't think you need to have seen the source movies to enjoy the film. In fact, I enjoyed discovering the movies I hadn't seen before. Some scenes I recognized, many I did not. I found not knowing the original scenes helped them fit into DMDWP's convuluted plot better. Not knowing what was really happening in the scene means you only look at it as part of the DMDWP story.
I watched many of the source movies, like Robert Siodmak's 'The Killers', later. DMDWP was the main source of my 'must see' list for the next few years.
