Why did Aughra have the shard?
This has been puzzling me for awhile.

This is actually covered in much of the backstory that never made it into the film.
But in short, the skeksis created replicas of the shard to confuse Gelflings. The Gelflings tried getting Aughra to help find which was the real shard. She didnt know how and as a result ended up collecting them. It wasnt until Jen came by that figured out how to find out which was the right one.

She witnessed the whole catastrophe when the crystal broke etc... so I can only guess that she took it at the time.
What puzzles me is why the skeksis never tried to get it from her before, presuming they knew where it was.
in the book they go a bit more into her back story.
she was friends with the entity (i forget the races name at the moment, sorry) that became the scientist. The book went on to say that after the split they were not as polarized as they are when we see the movie... after the split the scientist helped to build her observatory and such.. so she was at the castle and such for a while. she probably pickled it up or palmed it figuring it might come in handy some day.
His name was TekTih...According to Froud´s book,the Gelfling took all the shards to Aughra,hoping she´ll be able to tell them which one was the genuine,but she didn´t knew,so she kept them all (just in case).
