What would have happened if the prophecy weren't fulfilled?

Augra said that the Skeksis would have "power over the stars", whatever that means. Also, the Skesis said that they "would live forever." Would this have been literally true? What would have happened when the next Great Conjunction came around? Would the Skeksis gain even more power? Or could they have lost the power they had becuase of another prophecy?

I hope you don't mind me responding. You sound just like me, like what if Jen had gotten the wrong shard, what if he healed the crystal and the UrRu (Mystics) never showed up... seeing as the UrSkeks, the beings at the end of the movie, basically made the castle with just their powers. I think it was literal. They would be able to make the suns align and shine on the crystal so they could live forever and not have to wait until minor conjunctions. Well seeing as the shard couldn't be destroyed, at least I don't think it can, maybe some other species of Thra could have healed the crystal. Brings up so many questions. Sorry I couldn't give you definite answer, I often ask myself these same questions.

Aughra might just be missing the right words, seaphil-87-260699, because I think that she means that without something to stop them, the Skeksis will continue to have power outside of the stars which refers to their remaining untouched by nature. They would not be able to control the changes in the universe, but would stay immune to those. The Skeksis briefly claim perpetual reigning since they only need to perform the very easy tasks of murdering Jen and Kira to ensure their freedom. In a future of Gelfing extinction, the monsters, if any were still alive, would be unaffected by the next Great Conjunction. There would be nothing more to gain, and only a Gelfing can destroy the evil empire. Given that the alignment of the suns occurs once a millennium, it is unlikely that the Skeksis would witness the next one. They are not immortal, and if the emperor who dies is the original one, then it is due to the excessive rejuvenation that he has had access to. Eventually all of the Podlings' essence would be taken and the horrible creatures left to rely on biology alone.
