Anyone who has seen this and is knowledgeable about the Revolution;

s it accurate? It is meant to reflect on 1983 Poland

A bit late the game, but one my profs recommended this a long time ago, and I just came across it, so I saw it for the first time.

I am not an expert on the French Revolution. My area of concentration is mostly 19-20th century Russia-Soviet history, primarily the Leninist-Stalinist era. That said, I do have a background in general European history, and I teach European history, post Renaissance.

I really like this film, and I would use a couple of the clips of Robespierre and Danton in class to demonstrate the rabid nature of the revolution. I especially like the lines Danton has comparing the Revolution to Saturn, "eats it's children." I also like that the executions for what we know are accurate, as are his final statements. Including the prediction Robespierre would soon follow.

What I am not comfortable with, is the way he comes across as a quasi "good guy." Certainly Danton was not as blood thirsty as Robespierre and the rest of Montagnards at the time the movie is set - however, he himself had a great deal of blood on his hands.

The movie is accurate in that he was in fact trying to be a moderate voice in the upheaval of The Terror, but Danton had also fed that the revolution and the ensuing Terror. See his provocative role \ reaction to the regicide and the destruction of the oppositionist Girondins party.

Basically Danton helped plot the way to the guillotine for many people long before he walked it himself.

I also wish the movie has ended with a few short sentences on what happened to Robespierre and St. Just a few months later.
