Mark Patton says the dvd is coming soon!

This amazing film is finally being released and it looks like there will be commentary as well. Too bad Altman passed before his could be recorded. One of Altman's best and Cher's best to boot.

Yep! I also saw that article where Mark Patton said he had recently recorded a commentary for a DVD release of Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean. The article can be found here: http://chernews.blogspot.com/2012/02/come-to-dvd-jimmy-dean-jimmy-dean.html

Still waiting for some kind or announcement.

Hooray!!! This is one of my all-time favorite films, and I've been awaiting a DVD release for forever (cuz the quality of the Embassy VHS sucks!). Knowing there's a Patton commentary sweetens the deal, but here's hoping there'll be more extras....

I hope this title is still coming to DVD and/or Blu-ray. We've really heard nothing, other than the fact that Mark Patton has been interviewed. Last year would have been the film's 30th anniversary, which some companies would have wanted to use as a selling point. That kind of implies that Criterion might be the DVD company involved, because they don't really employ that brand of marketing. They've done other Altman films in the past, and have also licensed some titles from Paramount (such as the upcoming Criterion release of MEDIUM COOL).

I found the DVD 2-3 years ago, but I don't recall where I found it.

With all due respect, you may be describing a different DVD. Did the DVD you found have an interview with Mark Patton on it?

The film has still not been released on commercial DVD or Blu-ray, although it has been rumored as a possible title for the Criterion Collection someday.

With all due respect, I just wanted to see the movie again. I had it recorded on VHS from about the time it was released and probably shown on HBO or Showtime sometime back in the mid-80's, but I no longer even had a VHS player.

I never knowingly buy pirated movies, software, etc.

If it is "not on DVD" yet and I have a DVD of the movie, then I suspect I got it from someone who burned it and sold it w/o official permission. At the time, I didn't realize that was so. It only has a special section with some Cher songs including "Beleive"(yes, spelled that way...never noticed it before. I will shread this one and buy the official DVD or hopefully Blu-ray when it released.

I keep hoping that Criterion will release it on Blu-ray. Most of the cast members are still with us.

I can't imagine any other label interviewing Mark Patton.

What's happening to the DVD?

Nobody has announced the film for DVD. I hope that Mark Patton wasn't just blowing smoke.

Releases get held up all the time. Susan Tyrell recorded a bunch of extras for "Night Warning" about 7 years ago; she died a year and a half ago and the movie's still being held up in legal limbo. Let's hope it's not anywhere near that long a wait for this to hit disc.

Currently the movie's airing on a network called 'Movies'... but they've gone so far overboard bleeping out words that even "Christ" and 'boobs" are getting censored. As often as they swear in this flick, it makes viewing kinda difficult. On the plus side, it's widescreen, the picture's fairly sharp (taking into consideration the whole thing was shot in soft focus) and I haven't seen indications of reel changes, so I surmise it's been transferred from the IP negative. I doubt anyone would've gone to the trouble of remastering the film like this if a wider release wasn't being prepped.

Thanks for the update. Criterion has just announced NASHVILLE for Blu-ray release in December, so Robert Altman is still on their radar. I assume that Mark Patton's interview was for Criterion, so I'm still hopeful that Criterion will release JIMMY DEAN someday.

I've never heard of the "Movies" network. Is that a satellite dish deal? I know that there channels that are only available via satellite, such as MGM's Epix Channel.

reply

I'm watching Jimmie Dean right now on what's called the Movies! channel - here. Here in Austin it's broadcast as a subchannel of Fox TV - not cable. This channel shows a wide variety of old movies but you have to put up with a lot of commercials.

The channel is only broadcast in certain cities. You can check if your area is included and also check the schedule for upcoming movies. http://moviestvnetwork.com/

Yes, I just watched it also here in the Dallas area. I'm very pissed off that they ("Movies") cut all the "bad" words from the dialog. As a born-Texan, I wished that Cher had said "bolognee" instead of "bologna" whenever she was reciting the items that Juanita needed from the grocery store, and that Mona had said "fix" instead of "repair" when referring to the bus she rode back from her trip to "Riatta". Other than that, I love this movie!

reply

Thanks for the guide. As I suspected, the channel is not available in my state.

I definitely don't want it full of commercials. So, I'll hold out hope that it will be released by Criterion someday, especially if Altman's NASHVILLE sells well for the company.

reply

It's showing again on the MOVIES channel again for anyone who wants to see it.

reply

It has been acquired by Olive Films, so it should be coming out on Blu-ray and DVD later in 2014. I doubt that it will include the interview with Mark Patton, however.

The Blue-ray came out this year or very late 2014. I have my copy, and it is GREAT! They have it on Amazon.
