This is such an oddly captivating movie!

I think I've seen this a total of, oh, what, 10 times now? Everytime it's on TV, even though Sandy Dennis' little quirks get on my nerves, and this is probably one of the cheesiest eighties movies ever, I can't help but watch it.

I know exactly what you mean! This is actually one of my favorites. In this film we see the beginnings of the actresses Cher and Kathy Bates would someday become. I do have to respectfully disagree with you about Sandy Dennis, though. The character was written to be nervous and Dennis, as a neurotic in real life, was just great in this, IMHO. Glad to see that even the most obscure films are being discussed!

This is so bad it's gone past good and back to bad again!

Woah! I'd forgotten about this post. Great movie though, isn't it?
I have to admit, since I wrote this, I've come to appreciate Sandy's unique style. Especially in this movie. Her character is actually my favourite, next to Cher's.

Cher is brilliant in this movie! I loved every minute of it. I can see why she got the attention of Mike Nicholls.

I'm glad to see Cher getting her propers here. Many people ignored her performance in this movie, which I believe is the finest of her career.
The first time I saw the movie, I was focused on Sandy Dennis, but after several viewings, I came to believe that Cher was actually the glue that held this movie together. Her performance is easy to overlook, because she doesn't appear to be acting, which of course is the sign of a great actor!

I consider "5 & Dime" to be one of my all time favorite films and Robert Altman's best. I cannot think of another movie that I rank so high and the public ranks so low.

It is indeed a captivating film, though I'd much rather see this performed in the theater because this adaptation feels very stagey to me. Regardless, it's an interesting curio that shouldn't be forgotten. 7/10 stars from me.

Yep, 'oddly captivating'.
