Duran Duran's THE LEOPARD

If you listen closely to the song The Leopard on Duran Duran's new album ALL YOU NEED IS NOW, you will not only find echoes of past glories like The Chaffeur & picturesque lyrical references to the feral women that populated their videos (such as Hungry Like the Wolf) but, halfway thru the song, you can hear a keyboard/guitar riff that's evocative of Paul Schrader's Cat People soundtrack as performed by that genius Giorgio Moroder. To drive the point home, listen to the story told in the song: It's about a man obsessed with a leopard-ess (or is it a real woman?) who cages her & gets found out in the end. There's a (fake? - i'm not sure of this since i actually saw once on TV a news story exactly about the following) newscast audio at song's closing talking about how this leopard was found in a building (where the man lives) that brings to mind the early scene in the movie when the beast was found after clawing the hooker's leg.

BTW, i love this movie, its cast, its setting & soundtrack.

finally, someone else sees the connection! i believe it's totally intentional. if i recall correctly, i rememeber as a teen in the 80's reading something in a music magazine about one of nick rhodes' favorite movies at the time being cat people. so yeah, a nod to that, definitely.

Glorious song, perhaps their best since Ordinary World and Come Undone.
