Theme song showed up in Inglorious Basterds

This is a great soundtrack. I was shocked and delighted when the Bowie song (the version in the movie and on the soundtrack, NOT the one on Bowie's album) "Putting Out Fires with Gasoline" was featured during a pivotal scene from Inglorious Basterds.

I had just watched Cat People so this was a happy coincidence.

Yeah, it reminded me of Cat People, which I saw before I watched Inglourious Basterds!

Yes, it was at the beginning of Chapter 5, in the scene which Shoshana was putting on makeup preparing herself in making that film footage to surprise the Nazis.

I think it's Tarantino's obvious homage to Cat People.

Shoshanna sort of looked like Nastassia Kinski back then too.

Bowie's song was a huge hit in Europe back when Cat People came out.
I love it. I have no idea why in the USA it never got the right treatment. I remember getting a "Greatest hits of David Bowie" CD here in the US in the late 90s and to my dismay the song wasn't included.

Nastassja Kinski actually was supposed to play a role in Inglorious Basterds. Quentin Tarantino even flew to Germany to meet her, but no final deal was made.

That makes complete sense, then. :-)

I know! Mélaine Laurent looks like she could be Kinski's daughter!

Martin Scorsese IS the best

For the longest time, the only reason I re-watched Cat People was for the theme song. Beautifully interpreted by Bowie and haunting.

I liked the humming theme in the beginning of Cat People, but not the song itself. In IB it's there for no reason whatsoever, kind of like those heavy metal songs in Argento's Phenomena.

Did anybody notice that a modified version of "Irena's Theme" was also used in the Robert Downey movie: "Less than Zero" ('87)?

Listen carefully to the music in this trailer:

I agree. I love the instrumental version with Bowie humming at the beginning.

I like the first part of the actual vocal version, especially Bowie singing "See these eyes so green". It goes so well, with Oliver and Irene (in panther form), at the climax of the movie. Once he starts rocking out, and it turns into a disco song, it ruins the haunting opening of the tune.

The humming version, which was in the opening scene in the movie, is absolutely amazing masterpiece, but the version with Bowie singing is horrible and ruins the whole mood. I couldn't even listen to it completely before I had to stop playing it.

I was also looking for the opening theme from Youtube and to my surprise they were all versions with Bowie's singing and the actual opening theme couldn't be found at all. I simply can't understand that, since the humming version is only like a million times better and no-one uploaded that? Even the soundtrack CD didn't have it (at least the version I found), which is equally strange and disappointing. Luckily I have the movie and I can always watch it to hear the amazing music, which is without a doubt one of the best music I have ever heard in a movie.

The movie itself, apart from the music, was also amazing and the actors were all brilliant. This is a great movie and the IMDB users current score of 6.0 is astonishingly low. This deserves much more.

First off, I have the soundtrack on MCA records, and that humming theme is definitely on the soundtrack. Second, Bowie's "Cat People: Putting Out Fire" is an excellent song, and a huge hit in Europe. I guess you are not a Bowie fan.

Fabio Testi is GOD

Agreed; but name me something that Bowie did that was not beautiful. Sons of the Golden Age? Maybe. Can't think of anything else.

Tarantino and myself are the two biggest fans of this film that there are, lol. True though to a degree, I've been big on this film since I was a kid, and I know Tarantino has said he's a big fan of this under appreciated film as well.

My body's a cage, it's been used and abused...and I...LIKE IT!!
