It's STILL a Beautiful Piece of Work

At least, for me. Yeah, yeah, I know..."it's not like the book(s)."

Tough.

In music, artists routinely perform their own arrangements or interpretation of a work, and this is accepted, even praised. In Theatre, new productions frequently employ new stagings and approaches to established works. Films adaptations are frequently not "exactly like the book." The Shining is not entirely faithful to the King novel, but the general consensus is that it's a good movie on its own. Same with Cannery Row.

I like everything about it. The overall gentle, fairy tale, almost mystical mood, the humor, the (cliché) romance story, Huston's narration (I don't care that the text is not lifted from the books,) the SETS (!!!), and, of course, THE MUSIC!!!

We just watched it again last night, and it STILL enchants me.
