Why was sex scene edited out?

There was an intense sex scene between Jack and Elpidia that never made it to the final print. I wonder why they decided not to keep it. Maybe because they actually had sex? There were pictures of the scene in Playboy. This was the early 80's so sex scenes were common. A year earlier Jack banged Jessica Lange silly in that other movie.
