Neo Noir atmosphere but ending belong in an Action Movie not a Noir film

Am I the only one who felt the minute they started spraying car at the end. He quickly reacts Charlie reacts and put the baby below the passenger seat. In my head I was thinking he had sealed his fate. The movie seemed to forget it deeper meaning for momentum toward the end. I also thought Charlie could of been wounded ans was going to bleed out after giving the woman her baby. This movie is on fringes of Neo Noir like The Big Sleep is for film noir. It put it's character dark cynical world but won't give a realistic ending because of audience might not be okay with a downer ending.

Of course, you do realize that those two freeze frames with Nicholson and the Mexican girl do not mean it is a happy ending - Nicholson is probably going to be in some deep trouble after the deaths of those border patrol cops.

Disagree. I've decided it's a neo-noir based on several elements: the Kafkaesque atmosphere, the lack of trust in others, and the dependence of one person to take charge of the situation.
