Britney Spears

On a TRL interview recently, they went behind the scenes of her 2004 Onyx Hotel Tour. Britney took the crew on board her tour bus and showed them her entertainment system. She proudly showed off two of her faveourite DVDs... 'Pretty Womwn' and 'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas'!

What? I know that "Whorehouse" isn't exactly Shakespeare, but 'incredibly racist, sexist and a bit homophobic'? Race is never mentioned once in the movie and ,while I do sort of see your point on sexist, (objectification of women), Miss Mona is the owner, she's seen as opinionated and willful and sure as hell stands up for herself. And, come on, can a movie with half naked (or more) men dancing and singing in a locker room really be considered homophobic?

The "homophobia charge" is probably fair (though a bit of a tempest in a teapot), but what you call Racism has another, more applicable name: realism. Far from being a "Mammy," Theresa Merritt's character was simply a domestic. Surely you aren't implying that every African-American woman who isn't thin and beautiful is a "Mammy." The racial segregation of the couples is likewise realistic. The film may have been shot in the 80s by a Hollywood studio, but it was set in rural Texas in the early 70s. Newsflash: races didn't mix much in that milieu. That African-American prostitutes and johns were in the same room would have been fairly progressive for the time.

reply

No way in HELL is this movie homophobic...not a chance. The football locker room was full of half naked...and sometimes fully naked men! If that wasn't done to please women and gay men...I don't know what was.

Homophobic? Not a chance.

If you love someone, set them free. If they come back, nobody else wanted them either.

reply

Showing no "race-mixing" is racist? Puh-leaze. Then any movie with all single-race romances is racist. Anybody feigning social outrage over a movie like Best Little Whorehouse needs to get a friggin life.

What a wonderful attitude you have...I get really tired of people who constantly have to read negativity into every little thing. Thumbs up to you, my friend, for not taking life too seriously!

of course she carries the whorehose dvd around! it reminds her of her roots when she's away on long tours.

So wouldn't anyone like this movie if it wasn't a movie she liked?

reply

what the hell are you going on about? this film was before britney's time. what kind of loser likes it just because she does?

Since this got so far off the initial subject...

First of all, yes, the film was made in the '80s. But it's loosely based on real-life events (that took place in '73 -- though it almost feels like late '60s in the film). I never saw Jewel as a "mammy" type. They showed glimpses of a geniune friendship between Jewel and Mona (as well as a friendly ribbing between Jewel and Ed Earl). Interracial relationships were still incredibly taboo in '73 (hell, they were still taboo through the '80s), so I don't see a "racist" problem there.

As for DeLuise's Melvin Thorpe being a stereotype, obviously you've never heard of Marvin Zindler, the real-life newsman the character was based on. Adored by the people of Houston, Zindler would be a laughing-stock anywhere else for his insane theatrics, bad wigs and Elton John glasses. Zindler even performed "The Sidestep" during one of his segments last year as a comment on escalating gas prices. While Zindler's not particularly effemanate (which DeLuise naturally is), he's sort of a freak of nature. Marvin's bio is here:

An article about the real events (from Zindler's own newstation) is here:

Britney doesn't have enough class to work at the Chicken Ranch. I wonder if she is interested in starring in the remake if that is still in the works.
