How much did this follow the show?

After I watched this movie I have always had a real interest in wanting to see the shoe it was based on. As far as I'm aware the plot followed it pretty closely,but the movie was more of a vehicle for Dolly Parton and the story had to be focused more on her and not the whores. I also know they cut out some songs and added new ones. I guess my question is could I still enjoy the show itself and not mind how different it is?
