So how come he couldn't control horses???

Horses are some of the dumbest creatures on earth. So maybe they were too stupid to understand him.

Now I await the scorn of horse lovers...

i literally just finished watching this movie seconds ago and it was the topic of conversation throughout the whole thing.

I think he can only control one animal at a time. And he's usually immobile when he does that because he's seeing through the animal's eyes and not his own. Usually, when the animals were fighting for him, they did it on their own, not because he was making them. Like he said, they were his friends. He didn't have enough time to befriend all the enemy horses. ;)

He asked us, "Be you angels?"
and we said, "NAY, we are but men," ROCK!

They must've realized their mistake after the film was finished... in Beastmaster 2, he controls a horse within the first ten minutes.
