The ferrets?

I watched this earlier today...first time seeing it since I saw it YEARS ago. The one ferret sacrificed himself and fell into the fire BUT I remember when I watched this before that we were made to believe the ferret died but then Dar was reunited with BOTH ferrets at the end?

I was expecting to see BOTH at the end. Instead, I saw the female ferret and her two adorable babies. So then the male ferret really did die?

I must've remembered it wrong, then.
