Do You Want to See a Re-Make?

Does anyone really want to see a re-make of THE BEAST WITHIN?

I suppose it could be done for the sake of entertainment value, but little else could be done to improve the original, because the original was good enough.

If there was a remake set in 2008 and Billy is 17 years old, that would mean his biological mother is ambushed and raped by the transmorgrophied swamp man mutant in 1991 or later 1990. Only minor adjustments would be needed to bring the remake up-to-date. You notice the original did not require extensive use of expensively-constructed sets. Normal outdoor settings and old buildings served as the film sets in the 1981 original. The couple might look younger like in their later 20s. The car would of course be a modern make. The woman's clothes would be different, that is, she would be wearing a short skirt with the jacket and blouse and pantyhose, as was common attire back in 1990-91. The question for a remake here is, presuming the MPAA rating is still going to be R - I don't see how a studio could tone down the gore to a PG-13 rating and still maintain the original plot - how far are the studios going to allow the nudity and sexual violence. Toning down everything to achieve a PG-13 ratings in this politically-correct social environment of 2008 would inevitably produce an inferior remake with no doubt a loss of investment. If the movie producers and director take the obvious road and figure, "Heck, it's going to be R-rated anyway because of all the blood and gore, why not just go with it?" That means replicating the original nudity and sexual violence of the original. There is the possibility that more explicit nudity and graphic sex could be filmed, or at least filmed but used only in an NC-17 DVD version. In the 1981 original, a body double took the places of Bibi Besch and Kitty Moffat in their rape scenes. It was fairly obvious though. When the mother's husband finds her naked and unconscious in the swampy woods, the woman he is carrying out in his arms looks to be much taller than Bibi Besch, who was 5'4" in real life. The body double looked as if she was 5'9" or 5'10". The body double for Kitty Moffat is not so readily apparent until you watch the movie again and closer. It's possible that the same body double replaced both actresses. It was convenient that both Besch adn Moffat were blonde, so only one blonde body double needed hiring. One imdb poster below claims that his mother visited the film set back in 1980-81 as she was a local inhabitant of the area. His mother reportedly told him that a young woman from a local college was hired as a body double for Bibi Besch. But given today's polarized politically correct social environment, it might be a tough sell to remake THE BEAST WITHIN. The only way I think someone could get away with it is to produce a direct-to-DVD version which could permit more graphic and explicit action.

There should be a remake, but keep it more true to the original novel itself.

I agree. THE BEAST WITHIN was ahead of its time because of its extreme violence and excessive gore which ranks it comparable to SAW and HOSTEL. A remake, in my opinion, would make money. Most young people today have not heard of this 1981 horror movie. It wouldn't cost that much money to do a remake. There were no elaborate sets to construct. The special effects could be mostly reused. Maybe the nudity could be a little more although it was pretty explicit in the original.

THE BEAST WITHIN could capitalize on the resurgence of the WEREWOLF-themed horror movie. If you truly think about it, the thesis is the same. The werewolf reflected man's submerged beastiality and primal urges. The Beast Within followed the same thought although the monster was different and instead of a wolf-transformation you saw an inner mutation like a caterpillar transforming through chrysallis into the butterfly.

If I was looking for an easy, cheap remake to make lots of money, THE BEAST WITHIN would be a sure bet.

The gore was hardly "excessive", the shoddy and rundown locations just made it seem more appalling. A would love a remake, as long as it is shot on old school film-stock, is set in technologically outdated town and handles the transformation scenes better. The Beast should've spilt its entire skin and muscles off like in The Fly for it to truly be like a Cicada.

I care nothing about a remake. I don't see this movie being made better by CGI and being shot HD. This film was a product of its time. Transformation films got popular as the AIDS epidemic was growing. The monster being a metaphor for unknown changes you could go through before you die of a disease no one knows how to combat. What meant something in the 80s has much less impact now. Honestly, instead of remaking the film, simply film Ed Levy's book instead.

No. Not even a little bit.

OP-you have hopefully grown up since you posted this in'09, at least I hope, but I've read several of your posts here and honestly-you need to rent a porno. The stuff you've described-it's really dumb. You said in another thread that you missed your calling and should be making films. If these ideas are what you think would be good, then no. You shouldn't.
